Renison groundbreaking ceremony.
Renison breaks ground on east side expansion

a news release from Rension

The ground has officially been broken for the new building that is due to be completed by the end of this year! The ceremonial shoveling took place on Thursday, July 5, with Paul Pink, Keith Hipel, Ellen Sue Mesbur, and Glenn Cartwright donning hard hats and doing the heavy lifting.

The “East Side Office Expansion” is being built on the east side of Renison, adjacent to St. Jerome’s University. It will be a single storey, 8,300 square foot building with 15 offices, one meeting room, two classrooms, a student lounge, and washrooms. The building will also have a hybrid HVAC system to allow for aboriginal smudging ceremonies in one of the classrooms.

The expansion is due to be completed by December 15, 2012.

Dear first-year me

By Jude Doble, Student Success Office

Each fall, more than 6,000 first-year students arrive on our campuses ready for their big Waterloo adventure. For most, it’s an exciting and challenging time where they learn to navigate their new lives as university students. To help the incoming class feel confident about coming to Waterloo, the Student Success Office (SSO) approached upper-year student leaders to make videos of what they would tell their first-year selves, in a project called Dear first-year me.

The results are 18 engaging videos where Student Life 101 experience leaders offer their advice on topics ranging from how to prevent geese attacks to how to ace exams to how to stay healthy – and everything in between. The videos are hosted by Campus Perks, a Toronto-based company created by a Waterloo VeloCity graduate, Dave Wilkins. Incoming students are encouraged to watch the videos, and support and share the ones they like the best via social media. Each interaction with the videos gives the entire Waterloo student community points which will unlock prizes all Waterloo students can benefit from during Welcome Week:

  • 500 interactions unlocks a hot fudge sundae party
  • 1,000 interactions unlocks a block buster movie shown on campus
  • 2,000 interactions unlocks a show-stopping performance by a popular Canadian band

The SSO is sharing the videos with the incoming class and also wants to engage the campus community to see what they can add to the conversation. If you could go back in time and give your first-year self some advice, what would you say? Tweet your advice using #dear1styrme and take a few minutes to watch the videos. If you like what you see, please support the videos by tweeting about them, sharing them on Facebook or hitting the support button.

Be part of the #dear1styrme conversation by sharing your wisdom with the incoming class of Waterloo students.
