VeloCity startups are hungry for talent

with files from Hope McCallum, VeloCity

VeloCity's first-ever Startup Recruiting Event is taking place at the University of Waterloo next week, marking a huge milestone in the start-up maker's contribution to the local economy and the campus community.

"The idea for the Startup Recruiting Event came to fruition to encourage more students to work at a startup, either full time or on co-op. That is why we partnered with CBET and CECA to ensure rich opportunities for all," said Mike Kirkup, director of student innovation and VeloCity at the University of Waterloo.

An incubator for student entrepreneurialism, VeloCity runs three programs: Campus, Residence, and Garage. Each program helps University of Waterloo students and alumni turn their inspiration into reality. VeloCity members benefit from valuable resources including workshops and seminars, as well as a connection to a community of mentors, investors, and other entrepreneurs.

"We have 27 startups from Waterloo Region recruiting at the event, as well as one California-based firm also looking for Waterloo talent," said Hope McCallum, manager of marketing and communications at VeloCity. "We anticipate a great turnout, particularly by students from Waterloo, Laurier and Conestoga, but the event is wide open for anyone looking for a job with the startups."

Community members looking for that cool job with a high-potential startup company should head over to the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre on Tuesday, February 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Social enterprise champions

Waterloo's a powerhouse when it comes to tech startups, and that same entrepreneurial spirit is working its magic with social enterprise as well.

Waterloo students are making sure of it.

Four of the ten semi-finalist teams in the Ontario Centres of Excellence Social Enterprise Competition, a provincial competition for social ventures, are led by Waterloo students.

The university will be represented by Waterloo Banking Project, EP Organics, Projexity, and Just Access in the Ontario Centres of Excellence Social Enterprise Student Competition to win one of four $20,000 prizes.

The teams gathered in Toronto for marketing and strategy workshops last week and are preparing their business plans and pitches for the final on Thursday, March 21.

Feds and Waterloo Housing & Residences partner for off-campus housing quality

by Jacqueline Martinz, Feds

The Federation of Students has partnered with Waterloo Housing and Residences to learn what the quality of life is like for students living off-campus. A consultation session will be held on February 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in SLC 2105B for students to share their off-campus housing experiences.

Through consultation sessions, the Federation of Students hopes to develop initiatives like “landlord of the year” to showcase excellent relationships happening within the community, redefine how uWaterloo Off-Campus Housing serves students, and collect valuable first-hand information from current students living in the community.

Students interested in attending the session should contact Ryan King, Off-Campus Housing, at ryan.king@uwaterloo.ca.
