The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Steering Committee has announced the results of the 2013 Campus Walk.

This year, more than 330 members of the university community participated either individually or as a member of 50-plus teams at the various Waterloo campuses.

All told, participants walked 41,576.4 kilometres - that's like walking from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Tofino, British Columbia nearly 7 times over.

The winning team in terms of total distance walked was Team Propel Centre, with 2336.1 km logged. Team members included:

  • Steve R Manske;
  • Carol L Murray;
  • Wendy D Cressman Zehr;
  • Christina Kroeker;
  • Vicki Rynard;
  • Katy Wong-Francq;
  • Stephanie L Filsinger;
  • Robin Jeannette Burkhalter;
  • Ornella Corvaglia- Douglas; and
  • Mari-Alice Jolin.

The top individual walker not part of a team was Sara Cressman of Conrad Grebel University College, who walked 234 km.

"Now that the campus walk challenge of 2013 is complete, we hope that you continue this healthy choice of walking and exploring the campus community and some of its attractive spaces are areas," says a statement from the steering committee. "Thanks for your participation!"

On Thursday, it's Shad Valley Open Day

Shad Valley Waterloo, the annual high school enrichment program that has been going on this month, is inviting all members of the university community to its Open Day celebration on Thursday, July 25 in the Great Hall of Conrad Grebel University College.

"We will be celebrating their achievements during the month-long high school enrichment program with exhibits of their many activities including their design projects and prototypes," writes Kim Boucher, program manager for Shad Valley Waterloo. "Their design project theme this year was 'How might we improve the safety and convenience of Canadian, all-season, human-powered commuting?"

The design project started with a panel of "human-powered commuters" from across campus and beyond that included Don Duff-McCracken of the Faculty of Environment's Mapping, Analysis and Design, English professor Jay Dolmage, Philosophy professor Mathieu Doucet, the Centre for Knowledge Integration's Darlene McGeer, and Waterloo alumnus and high school teacher Yaacov Iland, who served as the President of Waterloo's Federation of Students from 2001 to 2002.

"The students worked in groups to identify a specific problem or category of problems for Canadians who walk, ride bicycles, or roll (skates, skateboards, wheelchairs, etc.) as their daily transportation of choice, and then designed, developed, and built a physical product that solves the problem or problems," writes Boucher.

These products will be on display at the public open house from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"Our program has been very successful thanks to the support we have from the University of Waterloo including faculty, staff, and students from across campus offering workshops, recreation sessions, and guest speakers," Boucher concludes.

The University of Waterloo Staff Association (UWSA) is holding its special general meeting today from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in PHY 145. On the agenda are motions concerning the restructuring of the UWSA fee collection regime, constitutional changes that include the formalization of the position of "president elect," and a motion to increase association dues. Full details can be found on the UWSA's website.

The latest edition of the History department's speaker series takes place tomorrow, July 24, with Nanjing University PhD candidate and former journalist Shi Zhihong delivering a talk entitled "International News Reporting in Chinese Provincial Newspapers: a Personal Experience and Understanding," starting at 11:00 a.m. in the History Reading Room (HH 116).

Finally, I would like to thank my colleagues in Communications and Public Affairs for keeping the Daily Bulletin up and running while I was away on vacation last week. It was quite refreshing, except for the part on Friday when my family was chased out of Lake Huron by that crazy storm (pictured above). Speaking of which, if you have any photos of storm damage on and around campus that you'd like to share, let me know and I'll feature the best in a future Daily Bulletin.
