Monday, December 6, 1993 THE LAST DAY of classes for the fall term is also the first day for a construction project in the heart of campus. Student leaders and UW officials will break ground this morning (in the rain, it appears) for the new Student Centre that's to be created as an expansion of the existing Campus Centre. The $6.6 million project is funded by students themselves, through a $10-per-term fee that was approved by a referendum in January 1992. Today's groundbreaking starts with ceremonial shovelling at 11:00, outside the CC on the Math building side. From 11:30 to 12:30 there will be displays and refreshments -- inside the CC, it's good to note. And from 12:30 to 2:00, student performances are planned to celebrate the project's beginning. Among the many services expected in the new building is a "food court" to be operated by the food services department. There's a preview of the new facility in, of all places, the November issue of Ontario Restaurant News. Food services director Mark Murdoch reveals that it will have "a Southwestern decor theme" and offer "a cornucopia of non-branded, ethnic style foods, such as Japanese and Mediterranean cuisine, offered in an open concept, with scattered seating". Also in the new building: everything from a convenience store to a student council meeting room, as well as the library's reserve book service. Planners hope the building will open in September 1994. TO REMEMBER: Today is the fourth anniversary of the shootings at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique which left 14 female engineering students dead. In their memory, a candle-lighting ceremony sponsored by UW's Engineering Society is scheduled for 12:45 today in Davis Centre room 1350. A display of pictures and memorabilia about the murders is on view all day today in POETS Pub in Carl Pollock Hall. NOW ON UWINFO: The latest department to offer its services through the UWinfo electronic information system is graphic services. Its material went on-line last week. Among the information available is several years' listings of assignments done by Central Photographic, including many pictures taken for Gazette use. Such a listing will be useful for anyone wanting to reuse pictures in displays, brochures and newsletters. Chris Redmond Information and Public Affairs credmond@watserv1 ext. 3004
