Tuesday, December 21, 1993 SOLSTICE AND SNOW: Steadily falling snow is a reminder that today is the shortest day of the year and the first day of winter. Among the many cultures that celebrate the solstice as a turning-point in the year is that of Iran. Accordingly, the Cultural Association of Iranian Students has announced a Shabe-Yalda celebration for tonight at 7 p.m. in room 280 of Hagey Hall of the Humanities. All Iranians are invited. For more information, phone ext. 3828 or 2311. And Christmas is four days off, which is why the faculty of mathematics is holding its staff and faculty Christmas party starting at 3 this afternoon. Look for Santa Claus to put in an appearance. FUND-RAISING POSTS: Roger Downer, UW's vice-president (university relations), yesterday announced temporary appointments in charge of fund-raising activities for the university. There has been no replacement for Don Livingston, the director of development, who left Waterloo for York University earlier this fall. Becoming "acting campaign director" is Joy Roberts, the director of alumni affairs. Becoming "acting director of development" is Linda Kieswetter, associate director in that department. Said Downer: "This announcement formalises the arrangement that has been in operation since the departure of Don Livingston." LEAVING WATERLOO: The credit union's office manager, Lillian Good, has "succumbed to the call of the balmy south", says a note from her colleagues, and will retire at the end of the year. To honour her twelve and half years of "taking care of our members' financial needs", says Peter Robson, her boss, credit union members and friends are invited to a luncheon celebration today from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the credit union offices in the General Services Complex. Taking over from Good is a new office manager, Nancy Dahmer. Chris Redmond Information and Public Affairs credmond@watserv1 ext. 3004
