Wednesday, September 15, 1993 L'SHONA TOVA: This morning's Gazette says that Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, will be observed Thursday night and Friday. In fact, of course, Rosh Hashanah is a two-day observance, which begins tonight at sundown. PAY PHONE DEMONSTRATION: There's a second error in today's Gazette: it says the new Millennium pay phones are being demonstrated in the Campus Centre. In fact, the Bell demonstration is in the great hall of the Davis Centre, running through tomorrow. SOCIAL CONTRACT: The staff association executive is meeting this afternoon with UW's president and provost, to discuss any concerns about the Social Contract settlements on campus. Look for more information on such topics to be available soon. In particular, a letter will be issued before next week's payday (for monthly-paid staff and faculty) explaining exactly how the "unpaid days" will affect take-home pay over the next three years. Another letter is going out in the next day or two from the Pension and Benefits Committee, explaining the reduction in pension plan contributions, how it contributes to the Social Contract savings, and how it affects pension levels (it doesn't affect them at all). HAGEY LECTURES: Details of the 1993 Hagey Lectures were announced yesterday by the UW news bureau. The speaker is Dr. Andrea Lunsford of the Ohio State University, an English professor who is an authority on literacy, intellectual property rights (copyright), and rhetoric. She will speak Wednesday, October 27. Free tickets for the lecture will be available starting September 27. HONOURING LOIS BRIDGE: Long-time staff member Lois Bridge, whose most recent job was as secretary to the director of personnel, is the guest of honour at a retirement reception in the University Club this afternoon (4 to 5:30 p.m.).
