The Daily Bulletin -- July 22, 1993 =F9 Social Contract news: A memorandum from president Dr. James Downey is hitting the mail today (hopefully the noon mail) saying there will be no one-week shutdown in August as previously suggested. Here's the text: No August Shutdown "Many people have expressed concerns about the possibility of a one-week shutdown in August. Vacation plans have been made, and some have used all of their holidays for the year. August is a busy month for some departments, and it is impossible for them to close without a good deal of advance notice. "For these reasons, the Executive Council has decided that the University will not close this August except for the normal Civic Holiday on August 2nd. Any unpaid days that may be required as a result of the Social Contract can be taken later in the year. I expect to be able to provide full details on this by July 30th." -- James Downey, President Still on Social Contract, meetings continued today (faculty salary committee) and resume tomorrow with the staff compensation committee. Faculty Association is planning to meet tomorrow afternoon to discuss the offers on the table. A special UW board of governors meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 26 at 4:30 p.m. The Toronto Star reports today that the government has sent out 2,000 - 3,000 layoff notices to civil servants (members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union) to take effect just after News Year's Day. OPSEU officials are quoted expressing outrage at the job cutbacks. "The shock factor is considerable," one union official said. On other news, the Trivial Pursuit board game exhibit opened successfully in the Museum and Archive of Games (BMH) yesterday. It also helped celebrate the kickoff of the 25th anniversary celebrations for the Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies this September. Guest of honor was Dave Mackenzie, a former UW student and current board member at St. Paul's College. Mackenzie is one of the lucky original investors in Trivial Pursuit and got a big laugh when he quipped that he, too, was celebrating an anniversary of sorts: "It was also about 25 years ago that I was summarily kicked out of the University of Waterloo." He added that he's gloating just a bit now.
