Tuesday, June 29, 1993 STAFF MEETING: The staff association has set an "information session" (not an official general meeting) for next Wednesday, July 7, at noontime. As of this morning, a room hadn't been announced. The meeting will hear a report on "social contract" talks and the prospect for pay freezes, pay cuts, unpaid time off, layoffs or other unpleasant things as UW struggles to cut the budget in response to the Social Contract Act. Local talks about how those cuts should be made aren't running at full speed yet. Much of the action is still in Toronto, where negotiators for government and university managements (and such employee groups as choose to show up) are working on a "sectoral framework" agreement that would be the basis for local agreements at individual universities. Top UW officials are also looking at the "failsafe" arrangement that they would impose to achieve the necessary cuts if all parties -- management, faculty, union and non-union staff -- don't reach agreement by August 1. THANK YOU TO CO-OP: A "thank you" reception for "the people who help co-op students on the front lines" is planned for this evening (5 to 7 p.m.) in Federation Hall. Organized by David Drewe of the Federation of Students board of academic affairs, the event is co-sponsored by the Federation and the department of co-op education and career services. Guests of honour are the front-line staff in the co-op department; student leaders will also be there. Chris Redmond Information and Public Affairs credmond@watserv1 ext. 3004
