Daily Bulletin, Friday, December 23, 1994 FROM SKUNKS to saurians, it's been a lively year here on the Daily Bulletin, reflecting a lively if difficult year in the life of the university. My thanks to all contributors, supporters, backup editors, and especially readers of the Daily Bulletin through 1994. And here we are at the last working day of the year (for most of us, anyway) -- not forgetting that some students are reading today, too, and their work, like the academic enterprise itself, never really stops. Police officers, plant engineers and others continue to have duties over the eleven-day break. But the first day back to work for most staff, and the day offices and most services will reopen, is Tuesday, January 3. Among the services fully shut during the break are UW's libraries, which close at 6 p.m. today and reopen January 3. Most food services outlets are already closed. The only choices today are Pastry Plus in Needles Hall (closing at 1 p.m.), the Laurel Room (from 11:45 to 2:00), Double U's in South Campus Hall (closing at 2:00), and Tim Horton's in the Davis Centre (closing at 2:30). On Monday, January 2, the only food service available will be the Village 1 cafeteria and the Village Grill. Food outlets across campus reopen on January 3. Custodial staff are working an early shift today, from 4 p.m. to midnight rather than the usual Friday hours of 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., so they'll be starting work just as the day shift are packing up to leave for the holiday. Dave Churchill of plant operations has a special request: "Given the balmy weather we've been having," please make very sure all windows are closed before you leave today. There will be holiday celebrations across campus today, including an open house in the arts computing office in the PAS building, to which all friends are invited, starting in mid-morning. WHO'S OPEN: During the break, UW police will be on duty 24 hours a day. In emergency call 888-4911 (from a UW extension phone, ext. 4911). The Campus Centre will be open 24 hours a day throughout the holiday (turnkey desk, phone ext. 3867). Computers and networks should be in operation throughout. Service outages can be reported to the computing services help desk at ext. 4839 (888-4839). If the outage has a severe impact on the university computing environment and the right support personnel can be contacted, the problem will be addressed. DCS will be operating in a reduced service mode, and requests for tape mounts and similar services will not be honoured. The DCS Customer Support Centre will, however, be open for three days during the break: December 29, 30 and 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS: The plant operations department will keep the central plant going, but heat and ventilation will be kept at night settings from tonight until January 2. Anyone coming to campus during that time can expect to find cool buildings. It will save additional energy expense if coffee-makers, computers, office equipment and unused fumehoods are turned off during the break. Maintenance emergencies can be reported (24 hours a day) to the usual number, ext. 3793. Snow removal will be minimal and limited to priority areas, chiefly the ring road. Several construction projects will be taking place on campus, including work on the east stairwell in Engineering 1, the undergraduate office on the ground floor of Modern Languages, and the basement of the Davis Centre library. Ventilation will be shut down Monday, December 26, all day in the east wing of Engineering 2, for the installation of new air ducts. Three buildings will have complete shutdowns of electrical power and ventilation on Tuesday, December 27: Modern Languages, for a brief period starting at 10 a.m.; the Physical Activities Complex, from 6 to 9 a.m.; the Campus Centre and Health Services, from 11:00 to 2:30. PARKING: All parking lots will be open and free during the holiday period, except D lot under Needles Hall, which will be on normal access control. Gates to all service roads will be kept closed. FEDERATION HALL has a New Year's Eve party -- $25 for dinner and dancing, $7 just for the dancing; phone ext. 4042 or 4090 for tickets. Otherwise, Fed Hall is closed until January 2. THE COLUMBIA ICEFIELD will be open December 28 through 31; otherwise all athletics facilities are closed during the holiday. PHONES: Remember that while the switchboard is closed, you can call UW at 888-4567 and connect to any extension by keying in 1 plus the extension number. MASSES: The University Catholic Community will hold services in Siegfried Hall, St. Jerome's College, on Christmas Eve at 7 p.m.; Christmas Day and New Year's Day, 10 a.m.; December 31 at 5 p.m. THIS BULLETIN will reappear on uw.general, uw.campus-news and UWinfo starting January 3. Any emergency announcements during the break will be made on uw.general, uw.campus-news, and the "Flash" facility of UWinfo. An issue of the Gazette will appear on campus Wednesday, January 4. . . . So some of us go now to church, and some to feast, and some to skis, and some to bed -- and most of us to loving friends and families -- though some must study or must work: a dozen faiths, a thousand ways to live in harmony with truth through cold and dark December days. We pause from labours, when we can, and hear the season's whispered call to burn the candles of our lives for Peace on earth, good will to all.
