Daily Bulletin, Thursday, October 27, 1994 STUDENT PROTESTS: A bus leaves the Campus Centre at 9 tomorrow morning, bound for the downtown office of the MP for Waterloo, Andrew Telegdi. The plan: a protest there, with a few speeches, against the federal government's proposed "social program reforms", particularly as they affect higher education funding and threaten higher tuition fees. "We're hoping for 30 people," says David Drewe of the Federation of Students, calling that number "large enough that it's noticeable, and small enough that it won't get out of control." He can be reached at ext. 2340. Oh, and participants get lunch at the end of the event. HAVE A BEER: A volunteer reviewer advises that the Micro-Brewery Trade Show, which began yesterday at Federation Hall and continues today from 1 to 8 p.m., "is well worth checking out. One modest fee entitles you to a generous taste of a selected beer from each of the eight breweries, accompanied by interesting conversation with the firms' representatives. By the time you have filled your scorecard, the fee will seem very modest indeed." He adds: "Yesterday's tasting was well attended not only by students, but by faculty and staff as well." FOOTBALL WEEKEND: The football Warriors face Wilfrid Laurier University's Golden Hawks on Saturday afternoon -- 1 p.m. at the SkyDome in downtown Toronto. It's a semifinal game on the way to the Ontario Universities Athletic Association championship. Fan buses are leaving UW's Campus Centre at 9 a.m. and 11:00, with the early bus scheduled to arrive at the Dome in time for a pre-game on-field party. Tickets for the bus and the game are $10 from the Federation of Students office in the CC. Or you can get a ticket for the game only, no bus ride, for $6 from the athletics department (Red North corner of the Physical Activities Complex). PAINTINGS by Cheryl Ruddock are the new exhibit in the UW art gallery, Modern Languages building; the show opens with a reception at 4:00 today and runs through November 25. MBA DAY: Kerry Mahoney of the career resource centre sends word that some 15 universities that offer Master of Business Administration programs will have representatives or information available at MBA Day next Tuesday (November 1). The event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Davis Centre foyer. It's jointly sponsored by UW and WLU, for students from both institutions. REFRIGERANTS: The safety office has sent out a campus-wide memo about "servicing and disposal of refrigerants" under the Environmental Protection Act -- the rules, that is, on preventing chlorofluorocarbons from being released into the atmosphere. A key point: "Refrigeration equipment is to be disposed of only after the refrigerant has been removed and the equipment tagged by a person certified under the regulation." Safety director Kevin Stewart, at ext. 5814, can provide more information. BULLETIN NOTES: Readers who see the Daily Bulletin on uw.general or uw.campus-news may note that "Followup-to" is now being set to "uw.general". That should have the effect of keeping tangential discussions out of the newsgroup uw.campus-news, which is intended to be a low-volume venue for announcements. Readers who see the Bulletin on UWinfo aren't affected by this slight change. And let me pass along a thank-you to Donna McCracken of the plant operations department, whose daily routine now includes making paper copies of this Bulletin to distribute to supervisors (and, through them, others in the plant ops department) who aren't able to see it electronically. I encourage other departments to try a similar arrangement if there are people who don't have on-line access to the Daily Bulletin.
