Daily Bulletin, Monday, September 19, 1994 CAR IN A TREE -- how can this be? Not sure, but suspicion always turns to the engineers when a really good prank is sprung. Actually the Chevy, which looks rather like the survivor of a demolition derby, is up a lamp post, not a tree. Take a gander, just outside the Physics building. BUILDING MONEY: The federal and provincial governments have announced that they'll provide about $3 million towards two building projects on campus, plus a safety upgrade in the Student Villages. UW will have to kick in about $1.5 million of its own, raised privately through Campaign Waterloo. The government money comes through the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Works program, and was announced by federal and provincial politicians at a news conference on Friday. The two building projects, each budgeted at about $1.9 million, are an addition to Matthews Hall and an addition to the Optometry building. In each case the goal is to relieve pressure on laboratory space. Each addition is to be about 10,000 square feet. (Matthews Hall is currently 74,000 square feet, Optometry about 103,000 square feet.) Altogether, says the government, the building projects will create "55 person-years of employment and two long-term jobs". MEETING TONIGHT: UW's senate meets this evening (Needles Hall room 3001, 7:30 p.m.). Along with a 99-page agenda of other business, the meeting is expected to hear a report from the president, who says he will make public the long-awaited "O'Sullivan report" on UW's senior administrative structure. He'll also announce his response to at least some of the report's recommendations, and any immediate changes that are being made to the top administration. OPEN IN SCH: Marlin Travel seems settled into its new offices in the South Campus Hall mall. Not ready for prime time is the new food services coffee-and-muffin outlet, Double U's, which was expected to be opening today. Soon, no doubt. TENNIS TOURNEY: UW's second annual Downey Tennisfest takes place on October 2 starting at 12 noon. It's billed as a fun and friendly competition. Participants are guaranteed at least three matches in the round robin doubles tournament. Players will be assigned for each match, so signup is as individuals, not teams. A dinner follows. Cost is $30 for tennis and dinner, $15 for tennis only, and $20 for dinner only. Applications must be in by this Friday. For further information contact Shirley Fenton, ext. 4074, or Linda Howe, ext. 3580. HOLD YOUR FIRE: The grapevine says there was a fire in Chemistry 1 on Friday. The grapevine is wrong; it was a false alarm, UW police say. Chris Redmond Information and Public Affairs, University of Waterloo 888-4567 ext. 3004 credmond@watserv1.uwaterloo.ca
