Daily Bulletin, Tuesday, April 5, 1994 TODAY'S THE DAY: It's the last day of classes for the winter term -- which means the last day of undergradate classes, ever, for some hundreds of students who will graduate at convocation ceremonies in May. (The dates: May 25 for environmental studies, applied health sciences and independent studies; May 26 for arts; May 27 for science; May 28 for mathematics in the morning, engineering in the afternoon.) UPS AND DOWNS: The elevator in Biology 1 is out of service from today through April 17 for repairs. It'll be more reliable (and stop more evenly at each floor) when the work is done, says Horst Beyerle of plant operations. And on a real "up" today is Tina Roberts of the dean's office in applied health sciences, the winner of yesterday's raffle draw for a weekend at the Sheraton in Toronto. BOARD WILL MEET: UW's board of governors meets today at 3:30 in Needles Hall room 3001. On the agenda: tuition fees for 1994-95; the proposed new "student services ancillary fee"; a special presentation on the 25th anniversary of environmental studies at UW. TOBACCO SEMINAR: The role of the federal government in controlling tobacco use will be the topic of a public seminar at UW tomorrow morning. The members of Parliament for Waterloo (Andrew Telegdi) and Kitchener (John English) will be on hand for the event, which is sponsored by the Centre for Applied Health Research. They'll answer questions about the government's policy on curbing smoking -- an issue of particular interest since the recent cut in cigarette taxes. The seminar starts at 9 a.m. in Davis Centre room 3540 and will run for about an hour.
