Daily Bulletin, Thursday, April 14 THE MAIN PROBLEM: A water main under the Physical Activities Complex courtyard burst about 4 p.m. yesterday. "It's not unknown for this time of year," says Karl Dietrich of plant operations, explaining that pipes are especially vulnerable at spots near the edge of a parking lot or roadway, where frost is in the ground at different depths because snow has piled up on the grass all winter but been cleared off the asphalt. Until about 8:30 this morning, water supply to the PAC was provided by a hose run from a hydrant on the other side of the ring road. That meant the ring road was closed, with buses and cars detouring down the east (engineering) side of campus. Dietrich says his crew have found a way to supply the PAC from other pipes, so that the road has now been reopened. Digging to repair the break is starting this morning, and will likely be finished by the end of today.
