Daily Bulletin, Wednesday, August 10 Y'ALL COME BACK: Mark your calendars for Nov. 11 to 13 for UW's Homecoming '94 celebrations. "We invite alumni and the community to enjoy a myriad of fun activities offered," said homecoming coordinator Bonnie Oberle of UW's Office of Alumni Affairs. Some of the highlights include the 27th Annual Naismith Basketball Classic when eight of Canada's best university teams compete head-to-head. There'll be the South Campus Hall open house in the newly renovated "mall," along with a free family and community skating party with a special visit by Pounce de Lion -- UW's alumni mascot. Also on tap is an evening of informal wine tasting with expert Bill Munnelly, and the five-kilometre Fun Run around UW's Ring Road. For more information, call Bonnie Oberle at 888-4567, ext. 5422. WELL-KNOWN STAFFER: A retirement reception will be held September 14 for Gwen Lipke, who has been handling benefits claims for staff and faculty these past 26 years in the human resources department. "We've had a pretty good response, because she's well-known across campus," said Anne Wagland, who is compiling a list of people interested in attending the event. The reception will be held at Federation Hall, beginning at 4 p.m. RSVPs should be sent by August 19 to Wagland, ext. 2078. Gift contributions can be sent to Sandie Hurlburt in human resources. TWO OF OUR FINEST: Two veteran members of the university police service are handing in their badges after a combined total of 45 years of service. Phil McKay, manager of parking, and Sgt. Les Cunningham are retiring at the end of this month. A reception will be held in their honor August 24 starting at 4 p.m. in the University Club. "Everybody is invited to extend best wishes for a happy retirement to Phil McKay and Les Cunningham," said Sgt. Wayne Shortt, who is in charge of organizing their campus send-off. Shortt said McKay has been at UW for 20 years and Cunningham has been here 25 years. RSVPs should be sent by August 24 to either Shortt at ext. 6966 or Cathy Mitchell at ext. 3630. Contributions for a gift can be sent to Shortt at the university police service in the Commissary. BLAMING VICTIMS: The topic of today's philosophy colloquium appears to be controversial -- "Blaming the Victims: Is it Time to Begin?" Prof. Robert Moffat, of College of Law at the University of Florida, will be the guest speaker at the event to be held at 3:30 p.m. in Hagey Hall, Room 334. "My focus is on the exponential expansion of claims to rights by all and sundry, especially to buttress political claims of all sorts," Moffat says in a brief outline of his speech. "I next wonder about the impact of this development on reduced civility in civic discourse and growing intolerance in many different kinds of activisms." And he promises to "try earnestly to offend everyone." "Finally, I am interested in the political theory questions implicated in this development, and whether there are prospects for improvement."
