Daily Bulletin, Monday, July 25, 1994 PLANNING COMMISSION: Thirteen members - the provost and his twelve apostles, we might say -- have been named to UW's presidential commission on planning. The commission, announced earlier this year, is to start work in September on "plans for institutional development". It's to be chaired by the provost, Dr. Jim Kalbfleisch, who made the other 12 members' names public on Friday. There will be "possibly one additional member", he said. These are the members announced on Friday: -- Dr. Gordon Andrews of mechanical engineering, former president of the faculty association -- Susan Bellingham, special collections librarian in UW's libraries -- Rose Bilicic, undergraduate student in recreation and leisure studies -- Dr. Gail Cuthbert Brandt, principal of Renison College -- Doug McMullen of the National Alumni Council -- Dr. Bruce Mitchell of the geography department -- Dr. Prabhakar Ragde of computer science -- Dr. Susan Shaw of recreation and leisure studies -- Eric Sutherland, a graduate student in statistics and actuarial science -- Dr. Lynne Taylor of the history department -- Dr. John Thompson, dean of science -- Joanne Wade of the registrar's office, former president of the staff association Kalbfleisch noted that a staff position, officially "executive assistant" to the provost and president, is currently being advertised, "to provide research and writing support to the Commission". PARTNERSHIP WITH BANK: The Bank of Montreal/UW "Learning Technologies Partnership", being launched today in Toronto, promises to support education and training so that Canada's computer software workers can keep up with advancing technology. The partnership is funded jointly by the bank, through a $700,000 gift to Campaign Waterloo, and the federally-supported Software Human Resource Council, which is providing $660,000. UW will set up an international centre for the advancement of software technology and provide retraining programs for software professionals, who are at risk of becoming obsolete as high technology changes rapidly. "This ground-breaking strategic alliance between the bank and the university will develop for the public domain a model curriculum for training professionals in software technology," says Matthew Barrett, chief executive officer of the bank, who is also chairman of Campaign Waterloo. It's expected the initial program will be launched over a three-year period and then become self-supporting through grants, payments from companies and income from the course offerings. BASKETBALL WEEK: The Canadian national junior basketball championships are being held at UW this week. Pool play takes place each evening, starting tonight, with medal play next weekend. A special event comes Thursday at 8 p.m., when the Canadian national team faces Team Germany in the PAC main gym. Tickets are $8 (students $5) at the door.
