Daily Bulletin, Friday, July 29, 1994 THAT STUDENT FEE: UW has received official approval to start charging the planned "student service fee", starting in September. The fee was approved by the board of governors last spring, after agreement was reached between student leaders and top UW officials for a fee that would pay most of the costs for such services as athletics, health and counselling. The fee is to be $24.31 this fall term for full-time undergraduates, and $16.20 for full-time graduate students. The agreement with student leaders was settled on March 18. Five days later, as part of its announcement about tuition fees and university grants for this year, the Ontario government declared that student service fees could only be collected by universities after a "protocol" was arranged between the university and its student organizations. Guidelines for such protocols were announced at the end of June. And now UW has the all-clear: "The March 18 document has been certified as a final protocol," Bob Truman, the director of operations analysis, said this morning. NSERC PROGRAM: The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council has announced preliminary results in the competition for its new Collaborative Project Grants. UW's research office says 25 of the 52 projects proposed by Waterloo researchers have made the cut, including 13 from science, six from engineering, five from mathematics and one from applied health sciences. "The competition in this program is extremely rigorous," says Joan Hadley of the research office. Eventually about 100 projects will be accepted Canada-wide, from 973 original applications; about 600 are still under consideration. HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Monday, August 1, is Civic Holiday. UW offices and most services will be closed -- but the campus centre remains open as always, and UW police will be on duty (888-4911). Maintenance emergencies can be reported to ext. 3793, 24 hours a day. The libraries will be open for reduced hours: 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Dana Porter, 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Davis Centre. Saturday and Sunday library hours are unchanged. Steve Breen of computing services notes that the input-output room will be closed on Monday, but will be open Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. "If you notice an outage of the campus computer network or any major DCS-maintained computing facility during this period, you can report it by telephoning the DCS HelpDesk at 888-4839. If the outage has a severe impact on the university computing environment and the appropriate facility-support personnel can be contacted, the problem will be addressed; otherwise, it will be pursued Tuesday morning." The Graduate House will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday. OFF TO STRATFORD, in the interval between spring term classes and exams, are two groups (at least) of students. This afternoon, it's the Computer Science Club, seeing "Alice Through the Looking-Glass". Saturday night, it's the Math Society, seeing "Othello". I'M LEAVING for some vacation.
