Daily Bulletin, Wednesday, May 11, 1994 BIRTHDAY greetings, first of all, to Robert McKim of the civil engineering department. The day after the eclipse, all's gray and quiet, and there are a few events of some interest, including an organizational meeting of a Polish club at 6 tonight in the Campus Centre. Campus recreation programs are getting into full swing for the term -- scuba classes start tonight, for example. You can find the campus rec brochure in many hallways and lobbies, or call ext. 3533 for information. The UW retirees' association holds its annual general meeting this afternoon: 3 p.m., room West 102 in Village 2. ONE YEAR OLD: The Daily Bulletin has now been in business for exactly a year. The first Bulletin appeared May 11, 1993, noting that there were "plenty of rumours, but no news" about how the Ontario government was going to impose something called a Social Contract. It also announced a noon-hour lecture by UW's then very new president, James Downey, titled "A Humanist Meets His Waterloo", and public forums with three candidates for the post of vice-president (academic) and provost. A lot has happened in the past year, not least the Social Contract and resultant budget-cutting. Waterloo got its new provost, the computer pornography issue sizzled, student "ancillary fees" were introduced, a student pleaded guilty to the January 1993 murder of David Zaharchuk, an ice storm closed the campus for a day, and a rabid skunk was caught. The Daily Bulletin has been reporting it all. A faculty member told me recently that he'd had dinner with a colleague the previous night, and somehow the conversation turned to electronic communication and the Daily Bulletin. My friend was asked about me: "Who is this guy? Is this part of his job, or is he doing it on his own time?" Yes, the Daily Bulletin is part of my job as UW's director of internal communications. The biggest part of my work is editing the Gazette, but each day starts with the Bulletin, which appears around 10 a.m. on UWinfo and the newsgroups uw.general and uw.campus-news. Much of what I put in the Bulletin comes from things that are in the pipeline for the following week's Gazette. I add urgent day-by-day news and last-minute announcements (ranging from club meetings to eclipse safety). A certain amount of gossip also fits in -- the Bulletin is meant to be reliable and immediate, not formal and official. Suggestions are always welcome. An attempt is being made to count the total number of readers of the Daily Bulletin today, its first anniversary. I'll report later in the week.
