Monday, February 14, 1994 HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to you and your love, and to all of us at Waterloo! Those of us who studied mediaeval literature long ago will remember Chaucer's poem "The Parlement of Foules", which explains that birds choose their mates each February 14. Harry Logan of UW's English department says, yes, "The Parlement of Foules" is still on the curriculum -- but in the fall term, alas, not in mid-February. Lovers can eat poached salmon and strip loin at the Festival Room in South Campus Hall again today; the $9.75 Valentine special continues (reservations, ext. 3196). And if your heart is full, perhaps you could share your love through the blood donor clinic that's running from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Village 2 (North quad lounges). The Canadian Red Cross says blood is in short supply, and they'd be heartily grateful for a pint from you. OIL IN THE SEWERS: It was a mess -- the kind of mess that brings in environment ministry inspectors -- at UW's central plant Friday morning, when a corroded pump burst and started spilling #6 fuel oil, kept as a reserve to fuel UW's furnaces when the gas supply is interrupted. "Probably about 700 gallons got out," says Dave Churchill of plant operations, and went down the sewer system. Churchill says the oil "will be digested in the sewage treatment plant" and adds, "We're taking corrective action to put alarms on the pump." Central plant staff and people from UW's safety office were busy in the water and oil for a while, but got everything cleaned up and passed the ministry's inspection. JOB FAIR TOMORROW: "Partnerships for Employment '94" is sponsored tomorrow by UW, Wilfrid Laurier University, Conestoga College and the University of Guelph. It's a job fair in Kitchener (at Bingemans Conference Centre on Victoria Street North) introducing people from about 45 employers with permanent, summer and contract positions. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and shuttle buses will be running to the site from UW's Campus Centre. CO-OP DIRECTOR: A "position available" notice was circulated late last week for the job of director of the department of co-operative education and career services. It will also be in this week's Gazette. The post is at job grade USG-18 -- almost as high as you can get in the staff scale at UW -- and is "open to all members of the University of Waterloo". A staff member would be appointed in the usual way; a faculty member could give up academic status to become a staff member, or could retain academic status and be appointed to the job for a five-year term. Among the requirements listed: "a university degree with substantial management experience", "interest in education and student development", "a strong interest in marketing and 'customer service'".
