Wednesday, January 5, 1994 IN CASE OF SNOW: If Waterloo should be hit by a major snowstorm -- of the kind that slammed the Atlantic provinces and northeastern states yesterday -- how would UW decide whether and when to close, and how would people find out about it? Here's the official word, repeated from Gazettes and Daily Bulletins of early December: A decision to close the university is made by the president or provost, and announced to news media by the university's news bureau. No one other than the news bureau is authorized to call the media, and local radio and TV have been asked not to pay attention to other calls. A campus closing will also be posted to UWinfo, the campus-wide electronic information system, by the internal communications office. Look for the Daily Bulletin and for "Flash" on the main menu. There are two scenarios: * Cancellation of classes or closing of the campus during normal operating hours. This decision would be made during the day and announced as soon as it's made, with phone calls to departments across campus plus messages to the outside media and through UWinfo. * At other times, such as an overnight storm, the president or provost will cancel classes when the Waterloo County Board of Education announces that all chools are closed. Media will be informed as early as possible (before 8 a.m.). UW follows the school board's lead in these cases because the board has a longstanding system for evaluating weather conditions and announcing its decision. In such cases, UW classes -- including those in the evening -- will be cancelled along with all non-essential services. Non-essential staff will not be expected to come to work. Examinations that are scheduled on the day or the evening of a closing because of bad weather will be cancelled and rescheduled according to university policy. Radio stations that can be expected to carry announcements from UW include CKGL (570), CKKW (1090), CHYM (96.7) and CFCA (105.3), as well as UW's own student station, CKMS (100.3 FM). AUDITIONS TONIGHT: Faculty, Alumni, Staff, and Students are invited to become Musicians, Technicians, Actors, and Production Assistants in this year's FASS show, "FASS '94: Jest Add Laughter." Auditions will be held January 5, 6, 7 (tonight through Friday) between 7 and 10 in Hagey Hall, room 344. Theatre experience isn't necessary, but enthusiasm is, the organizers say. The show will be performed in the Humanities Theatre, February 2, 3, 4, and 5. Since 1962, members of FASS have collaborated to write, produce, and perform an annual "home-groan" musical comedy, while having a good time getting to know the many people that make UW great. For more information about this year's show, or FASS in general, please call Paul McKone, producer of FASS '94, at ext. 2757 (e-mail pdmckone@sail). NEEDS A NAME: The campus recreation program has set Friday, January 21, as the deadline in its contest to find a name for the brand-new recreation facility on the north campus, adjoining the Columbia Icefield. "The name should describe the New Building, the Icefield & any other possible expansions. Enter at the PAC Equipment Desk or the Turnkey Desk at the Campus Centre." CANADA-WIDE LIST: A list of Canadian universities, with mailing addresses and switchboard phone numbers, has been added to UWinfo, under the main menu heading "About the University of Waterloo". The list is based on the membership list of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. Canada's universities range from the huge and famous -- Waterloo, Toronto, McGill -- to the somewhat less-known, including Augustana University College and the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College.
