Wednesday, January 12, 1994 APOLOGIES to Andrew Telegdi, the new Member of Parliament for Waterloo, whose name was misspelled -- thanks to my flying fingers -- in yesterday's Bulletin. The spelling has been corrected in the permanent copy of the Bulletin on UWinfo. PERFORMANCE appraisals for UW staff will be happening this winter even though, because of the Social Contract, there's no possibility of pay increases. "Staff need to know," says a memo from the staff compensation committee, "that they are valued and recognized for their contributions, and the annual performance review is an important part of this process." The memo goes on: "Because the Provost's Advisory Committee on Staff Compensation realizes that this process is not an easy one for managers, they have developed a new form for staff members to complete and give to their managers prior to the performance appraisal being done. The Staff Activity Form will provide staff members with an opportunity to record their challenges, successes, activities and goals, and in turn provide managers with some relevant information which may make it easier for them to complete the Performance Appraisal Form." The new procedure is to be introduced to managers at a meeting this afternoon (2:00) in Needles Hall. SKIS BACK: The UW Outers Club has announced a "cross-country ski buy-back plan". Says its note: "You get the use of brand new skis, boots and poles for the entire winter, and the Club buys the equipment back from you at the end of the season." More information? A general meeting of the club starts at 6 tonight in Math and Computer room 2066, or you can call ext. 3497. COMING EVENTS: A couple of talks of more than ordinary interest are taking place at UW later this month: -- January 26, Rev. Stan McKay, moderator of the United Church of Canada, will visit UW to speak on "The History of Christian Missions to Native Canadians" (7 p.m., Conrad Grebel College chapel). The moderator will also conduct public worship in the Grebel chapel, at 4:30 p.m. the same day. -- January 31, Wes Graham of the computer science department, one of the pioneers of computing at Waterloo in the days when hardly an undergraduate anywhere in Canada had seen a computer, will talk on "Computing at Waterloo: The First Decade". His talk (8 p.m., Davis Centre 1302) is the first in this term's series of general lectures sponsored by the Institute for Computer Research.
