Wednesday, January 19, 1994 HOW COLD IS IT? Check the thermometer in the lobby of Environmental Studies if you want a moderately official answer. Well, at least Waterloo hasn't been hit with the kind of snow that's closing institutions to the south and east of us. Nor, of course, have we had a major earthquake lately. Classes are still cancelled at most of the University of California at Los Angeles today, while faculty and staff there check buildings for structural damage, chemical spills and other possible effects of Monday's earthquake. At the University of Southern California, so far as one can tell from reports on the Internet, classes have resumed for those who can get to the campus over clogged and twisted roads. One other note: Carolyn Pierce, formerly of UW, sends word that she's fine and there was no damage to her house high up in Rancho Palos Verdes. GRADE REPORTS: There have been a lot of technical problems with distribution of fall 1993 grade reports for undergraduate students. The process (for full-time students) is starting today -- sort of: Arts and AHS marks are available now, on the second floor of Needles Hall. Science marks should be available, also in NH, starting about 10:00. Environmental studies marks will be available in NH starting this afternoon, barring further problems. Mathematics marks will be available next Wednesday, January 26. Some special arrangements: First-year engineering students should go to Carl Pollock Hall room 1320. Other engineering students can find their reports at their departmental offices. Independent studies students can get grade reports at the IS office. Renison and St. Jerome's students get their grade reports at their colleges. Co-op students now on work terms will get their grades in the mail. Part-time students will be receiving grade reports by mail. In any case, don't believe the notice in this morning's Gazette, which is out of date (and has a major typographical error in it anyway). ROOMS AVAILABLE: Space for next fall and winter is available in Village 1 and in the Columbia Lake Townhouses, Wendy Cooper of the housing administration office says. Upper-year students who aren't in the Village now can enter a lottery for space there, with a deadline of February 3. For more information, call 888-0544. Applications for townhouse space will also be accepted until February 3; for information, call 888-4448. SUN LIFE GRANT: A reception is set for 2 p.m. today at which Sun Life Assurance Co. will be announcing "a major grant" to UW's Campaign Waterloo. That's all the information that has been made public so far. PAYDAY IS COMING: Here's a reminder that the January payday for faculty and monthly-paid staff will come two days early, on Wednesday, January 26.
