Campaign chair is honoured

As Campaign Waterloo moves toward a successful end, a dinner in Toronto tonight will honour Matthew Barrett, the chair of the campaign. Barrett is chief executive officer of the Bank of Montreal. Tonight's thank-you dinner for 80 people, at the Founders Club in the SkyDome, is being hosted by UW president James Downey, but an individual member of the board of governors, Toronto financier Andrew Sarlos, is picking up the bill. "It is not costing the university a penny," says vice-president (university relations) Roger Downer.

Downer notes that the dinner is "a celebration that we've reached our goal", the $89 million Campaign Waterloo set out to raise for the university. But the campaign isn't over yet: there are still projects that haven't been funded and donors who haven't been approached.

Loans to buy computers

A memo went out from the associate provost (finance) to faculty and staff members at the end of the week:
In response to a request from the Staff Association for assistance with financing of personal purchases for computers, we have made arrangements with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) to extend the program currently in place for Guaranteed Housing Loans.

All ongoing part-time and full-time staff and faculty are eligible to apply for a loan with the CIBC up to a maximum of $5,000 for the purchase of equipment from the UW Computer Store. The loan will have a variable rate of interest of 0.5% above the CIBC prime lending rate. Loan interest payments will be made monthly and principal payments as arranged between the employee and the bank. The loan period will be up to four years.

If you are interested in taking advantage of this plan, application forms are available at the UW Computer Store. The contact at the CIBC is Mrs. Brenda Scott, ext. 2948.

The computer store already has a loan plan in place to help students buy computers. The associate provost, Dorothy Battae, notes that under the new staff-and-faculty plan, the loans are guaranteed by UW through the computer store, which is an ancillary (self-supporting) enterprise. She also comments that not many people are aware these days of the "guaranteed housing loans" offered by UW to help staff and faculty buy a first house in Kitchener-Waterloo; maybe the computer loan plan will help draw attention to the existing program.

Gold medals are announced

The university graduate office has given out the names of high-flying graduate students who will receive gold medals at the fall convocation later this month.

Receiving the medal as highest-ranking PhD graduate will be John F. Corrigan of the chemistry department. Winner of the medal for highest standing in the master's degree program is Andrew P. Billyard of physics.

Fall convocation is scheduled for October 21. Apparently some people are wondering (says Jim Boniface in the registrar's office) whether audience tickets will be required for either of the fall convocation ceremonies, as they were for one of the ceremonies last spring. No, tickets won't be needed, he says.
