The summer comes to an end

The bookstore's starting to buzz, the leaves are starting to get that yellow tinge, the crews are working hard to get the repaving finished. We must be approaching Labour Day weekend and the beginning of the fall term (although co-op students on work term have already been on the job for four full days).

Monday, September 4, is Labour Day and a legal holiday. UW offices and most services will be closed, including the libraries. Graphics Express in South Campus Hall says it'll be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow and 12 noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, but closed Monday.

UW police will be on duty 24 hours a day as usual, phone 888-4911 (from on-campus phones, ext. 4911). The Student Life Centre will be open 24 hours a day as always. And maintenance emergencies can be reported to ext. 3793 at any time. Major computing failures should be reported to the computing services Help Desk at 888-4839.

Not closing for Labour Day are the UW bookstore and UW Shop, which will be open 12 noon to 4 p.m.

Students (and parents) arrive

While returning students presumably know what they're doing here, new students need a little more help -- hence the orientation program that's organized by a couple of dozen faculty, college and residence societies, and coordinated by the Federation of Students. The biggest orientation events next week include a noon-hour pep rally on Tuesday, and "Green Spirit Day" on Saturday morning, September 9.

Monday, as new students arrive at the Villages, their nervous parents are being invited to a reception at Federation Hall that runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Representatives from such departments as co-op education, health and safety, the police and the residences, as well as the six faculties, will be on hand to answer questions. UW president James Downey and Federation president Jane Pak will speak at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. There's free parking for the day in major lots near Federation Hall and the Villages.

From the registration newsletter

Here's some of the fine print being directed at undergraduate students from the registrar's office:
We would encourage you to Pay Your Fees as early as possible, so that you can avoid possible long delays in line-ups during Registration (Sept. 5-8). Pay your fees now . . . by cheque, money order or cash at the Cashier's Office, Needles Hall.

On-campus registration will take place in the small gymnasium of the Physical Activities Building. You may pick up your Schedule, Fee Statement and pay your fees. The hours of operation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In order to reduce possible line-ups during Registration, we would suggest that you follow the schedule below for your faculty.
Tues., Sept. 5 a.m. Science
Tues., Sept. 5 p.m. Engineering
Wed., Sept. 6 a.m. Arts
Wed., Sept. 6 p.m. ES and IS
Thurs., Sept. 7 a.m. Mathematics
Thurs., Sept. 7 p.m. AHS
Fri., Sept. 8 9 a.m. -- 4 p.m. All students unable to make the above schedule.

N.B. Late fees begin September 11.

A new photo identification card (WatCard) will be issued to all students beginning in the fall 1995 term. To receive a new card, students must present a government issued photo identification document (e.g. driver's licence, passport, Ontario photo health insurance card, Canadian citizenship card). The following is a schedule and location of the sites for the new cards.

New students: August 28 to September 1 in the Student Life Centre. . . . September 4, Labour Day Monday, in Village I and II. . . . September 5 to September 8 in Village I and the Student Life Centre.

Returning students: September 11 to 22 in the Student Life Centre. . . .

Before and after the dates stated above, WatCards will be available in the WatCard office located in the Commissary (near the Security office).

Single and Sexy is back

It'll be the seventh year for "Single and Sexy", a student-created play about sexual attitudes in the 1990s. (Well, it must have been about attitudes in the 1980s when it was first developed, I'd think.)

It's "an alternative to giving lectures", says Denise Angove of UW's health services department -- "a high-energy, entertaining, non-judgemental, powerful presentation". And it's free.

The first 1995 performance of "Single and Sexy" comes today at 1:15 p.m. in the Theatre of Arts. Everybody's welcome. Future performances, also in the Theatre of the Arts: Monday at 2 p.m.; Tuesday at 10:30, 2:30 and 4:30; Thursday at 11:00, 2:30 and 4 p.m. The show will also be on at Wilfrid Laurier University, on Wednesday.
