Happy trails to us

A City of Waterloo crew started work yesterday on UW's portion of the "Laurel Trail", a walking and biking trail that's to run from City Hall downtown to the northern parts of Waterloo. Says Rudy Molinary of the UW plant operations department: "This portion of the trail will be built adjacent to the tracks on land owned by CN Rail adjacent to the eastern boundary of the South Campus. Once the trail crosses Columbia Street it will hook up with the trail that the university built several years ago which extends from near the Brubacher House to Bearinger and Westmount Road. The official opening for the Laurel Trail is, I believe, scheduled for Sunday, October 1."

The co-op cycle begins

Today's the first day for this term's "return to campus interviews" in the department of co-operative education. Hundreds of co-op students will be checking in with their coordinators about how the spring work term went and what their plans and prospects for the winter might be. Dates and times for individual interviews are posted on the Needles Hall bulletin boards.

Job postings for the winter will be going up in batches starting September 25, with interviews set to begin October 10.

Where students can register

I was wrong in saying yesterday that undergraduate registration has moved back to Needles Hall from the Physical Activities Complex. In fact, the registrar's minions are over in the PAC for one more day, and will be heading back to NH tomorrow.

Bruce Pinder of the registrar's office has a word of advice for students who have faced huge lineups in the Student Life Centre as they seek to get the new WatCard. Wait a few days, he says. The old student card can still be used for the time being, and you can pick up your WatCard when things slow down a bit. The WatCard cameras will be in the SLC through September 22; after that, action moves to the WatCard office in the food services headquarters, General Services Complex.

The Feds need talent

Now there's a straight line that I'm not even going to touch! But that's what it says, on a note from Chris McGrath, arts co-commissioner for the Federation of Students. Says McGrath:
The Arts Commission of the Federation of Students sponsors various student projects in the creative arts field. We offer limited financial endorsements of special projects and organize various creative arts events over the course of the year. This term, we're looking for talented people to participate in events such as our Noon-hour Concert Series in the Student Life Centre Atrium, Student Art Shows, Coffee Houses, the Phoenix (creative writing and art journal), and other special events. If you are a performer looking for a showcase for your talent, contact the Arts Commission at the Feds office, 888-4042 (SLC room 235), or Chris McGrath, arts co-commissioner, at cfmcgrat@artscourse.

For faculty and grad students

Graduate students who are being paid as teaching or research assistants this term need to sign up for the payroll, unless they're already on the payroll from the spring term. To reduce congestion at the human resources office, there's a sign-up session today, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Math and Computer room 2065.

Faculty, especially newcomers, can learn more about the office of research and the agencies that provide federal research grants, at a workshop that's running this morning in Needles Hall room 3004. Information: ext. 6040.

Ready for some exercise?

If you'll need a locker in the Physical Activities Complex this term, the time to sign up and pay the fee is tomorrow, starting at 8:30 a.m. The lineup forms in the Red South area of the PAC. Locker fees are $10 for one term, $16 for two terms, $22 for three. If there are any lockers left after tomorrow, you can claim them on Thursday in Red South, or starting on Friday from the athletics department receptionist.

Thursday also sees the athletics department open house, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the PAC main gym.

And participants in Campus Recreation instructional programs, from swimming lessons to fitness classes, should be checking the CR brochure and preparing to follow the multi-step sign-up process next Monday and Tuesday.

Finally, mustn't forget

. . . to wish a happy birthday to the provost of the university, Jim Kalbfleisch, the man who (it says in the official verbiage) "carries operational and budgetary authority and responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the University". Big job.
