We remember a long hot summer

But it's grey autumn weather today, for sure, as the earth sciences department celebrates Logan Day. This annual "celebration of geoscience in Canada" is named for Sir William Logan, founder of the Geological Survey.

Says Phil Tibble, entertainment chair for the Earth Science Graduate Association: "Invited are all those with interests in earth sciences: staff, students, faculty, alumni, and the community at large. There will be softball and soccer games starting at 1:00 p.m. at Columbia Fields followed by the famous hammer throw, piezometer toss, and stoneman triathlon. A barbecue will be served with members of the earth sciences faculty flipping the burgers. A pub night at the Huether Hotel on King Street in Waterloo, featuring the Pandemonium Blues Band, will end the festivitie." Tickets are on sale in the earth sciences department's two locations, the Earth Sciences and Chemistry building and the B. F. Goodrich Building.

Local groups need volunteers

Opportunities listed by the local Volunteer Action Centre (742-8610):
Puppeteers are required to learn the material involved in puppet presentations on a variety of disability topics. Puppeteers will assume different characters or leadership roles. This fun and witty production is shown in school settings. This is an interesting and unique form of expression for creative/artistic people. Three hours a week, September to June, is required. Listing 077-110.

Exploring Leisure is a specialized recreation program for adults with developmental disabilities. Volunteers assist participants to become involved in various leisure activities. This is a terrific placement opportunity for someone in recreation or social sciences or for newcomers to become more familiar with the community. Listing 101-1358.

Meeting today about computing

The University Computing Committee holds an open meeting today to discuss its draft "Vision for Computing" statement and the work it's doing to advise the Commission on Institutional Planning. Interested staff, faculty and students are welcome. The meeting runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Arts Lecture Hall room 116.

Mature students are invited

UW "mature students", those who have returned to study after time in the workforce or the kitchen rather than coming straight from high school, sometimes need special support, which is coordinated through the office of mature student services. Among the activities are occasional lunches and other social gatherings at which mature students (the majority of whom are women) can meet. The fall luncheon for mature students is set for tomorrow; the office, at ext. 2429, can provide more information.

Film series is under way

The UW Fine Arts Film Society, operated by of the film program in the fine arts department, launches its fall series tonight with the 1990 film "My American Grandson". It's the first of six features from Taiwan that will be shown through September and October. Information: ext. 2442.
