St. Jerome's really digs it

Ground-breaking ceremonies are scheduled for 11:00 this morning at St. Jerome's College, which will spend about $1.6 million on two phases of renovation. Phase I, starting today, is an expansion of the cafeteria in the J. R. Finn (men's) residence, providing a new kitchen and servery and increasing its seating capacity from 150 to 275.

The expansion comes as St. Jerome's takes over the former Notre Dame College as its women's residence. The old cafeteria there will be closed, and students living in both residences will eat in the main cafeteria. An overhead enclosed passageway is being added to link Notre Dame to the Finn residence.

Coming soon: phase II of the project, construction of "a one-storey, barrier-free building" with offices, reception area and storage for the director of residences.

A reception will follow this morning's ceremony.

Staff asked about their pay

A note from Mark Walker, president of the staff association:
The UWSA will be releasing a Staff Compensation Questionnaire this week to assist us in our compensation talks. It will contain information on costs of the Social Contract, i.e. faculty salary increases, buy-back of Rae Days, and the savings derived from the staff agreement. Tables will compare average salaries of staff and faculty at Waterloo to other universities in the province.
He's urging staff members to read the information, fill out the questionnaire and send it back by April 17 so the association's compensation committee can get its ideas together for negotiation with UW management.

Performing at Humanities

Tonight at 8:00 in the Humanities Theatre: "Hand in Hand", a dance program by the Kinesis Dance Company of Eastwood Collegiate Institute. It's a benefit performance for the Social Planning Council of Kitchener-Waterloo. Tickets are $11 (students and seniors $8).

Report on dismissal case

Details of two faculty dismissal cases have become public at UW in the past year. In one case (that of Sehdev Kumar) a lesser penalty was imposed; in the second (that of Adrian Bondy) a decision hasn't been reached. The president has previously said there was a third case, and a little information about it was provided last week in a report from the faculty association's academic freedom and tenure committee:
Professor X, with tenure and approximately 30 years of service at the University, is undergoing dismissal proceedings, based on charges of sexual harassment.

On January 11, 1995, the President issued a letter dismissing Professor X from the University. Under the terms of Policy 53, a dismissed professor can contest the dismissal, at which point an external adjudicator is appointed to decide the case. Professor X has contested the dismissal, and an external adjudicator was appointed.

Four day-long hearings already took place in 1995. Two day-long hearings took place in mid-February 1996, and one in mid-March, and they will continue in late March, and possibly May, if additional time is needed.

The identity of Professor X has not been made public.
