Recreation and Athletics facilities shutdown

Today is the last day to use the athletics facilities since the PAC and Columbia Recreational Complex begin their annual summer shutdown tomorrow in order to complete various maintenance programs. Even the pool will be drained. Everything opens up again on September 3. The office in the PAC will remain open for anyone wanting to obtain information or to renew memberships. The Columbia Icefield will still offer its recreational skate, 12 - 1 p.m., Tuesday to Friday.

One-woman show

There's a one-woman drama called "Moonlodge" this evening in the Humanities Theatre, 8 p.m. It's written and performed by Margot Kane. This show is part of the Satir '96 Conference on campus this week, sponsored by AVANTA, the Virginia Satir Network and the Satir Learning Centres of Ontario. The conference is subtitled "The Power to Create Change." For more details: Pamela Loucks, conference coordinator, (519) 745-7485.

The Tempest continues to brew

Shakespeare's "The Tempest," presented by the Upstart Crow theatre company, featuring many current and former UW students, continues in Waterloo Park at the Bandshell, 7 p.m. Admission is free; donations welcome. In addition to the evening shows, there will be two afternoon shows, Saturday and Sunday, at 2 p.m. (no show Sunday evening). UW grad student Todd Pettigrew directs.

Scottish Festival in Fergus

This is the weekend for the annual Fergus Scottish Festival over in Fergus, Ontario, hard by Guelph. The Festival and "Bell's Highland Games" feature world-class pipers, heavy events competitors, highland dancers, Celtic music, clans, Tattoo '96, medieval historical re-enactments, fireworks, children's music and activities, Scottish foods and crafts and a highland historical tent. Starts today and goes until Sunday. Singer John Allan Cameron performs a pre-Tattoo concert, 7 p.m., at the Fergus Recreational Complex (outside). For information about the events: (519) 787-0099.
