Commission given first UW co-op award

The Ontario Insurance Commission has been honored by UW in the first of a series of Employer Recognition Program awards for outstanding work with co-operative education students.

More than 45 UW co-op students have been placed for work terms with OIC's Actuarial Services Branch during the past 15 years.

Initiated this year, the awards will be presented to businesses that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the co-op program.

Since 1957, UW has been in the vanguard of co-op education in Canada. Today it boasts the largest co-op program in North America, with some 8,550 students placed with 2,400 employers.

Foreign language volunteer wanted

The Volunteer Action Centre is seeking somebody who can speak Arabic or Polish to help a senior citizen benefit from a local program geared to older people.

"This volunteer would have to translate from English to Arabic or Polish so that the senior can participate in the program's activities," said Sue Coulter, Recruitment Officer for the centre.

The seniors' program, offered during the day at Victoria School Centre, provides outings, arts and crafts, among other activities. The volunteer is needed Fridays, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

"This is a great chance to make a difference in a senior's life and to gain more experience in working with seniors," Coulter said. For details on the position (number 122), call 742-8610.

The volunteer centre coordinates recruitment for 120 social agencies in the community, filling more than 600 positions in health care, social services, recreation and sports.

Walking the Web at Waterloo

by Chris Redmond:

If you choose the line on the UWinfo home page that says

"https://uwaterloo.ca/uw_infoserv/course.html" "Calendars, Courses and Examinations" you'll see a page that lists, well, calendars, along with other information about UW's graduate and undergraduate teaching. The whole text of "http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infoucal/contents.html" "the Undergrad Calendar" is available from there, for example, containing not just course listings but a wealth of other information.

From the calendar's table of contents, try choosing the link that's innocuously titled "http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infoucal/UW/index.html " "The University of Waterloo" (as if it might be about any other university). The result: a menu of choices including "University Jurisdiction" (a warning about ways you can get into trouble), "Degrees Offered", "Cross-Registration with Wilfrid Laurier University" and "Ownership of Student Work". All this material appears in fine print in the introductory chapters of the printed calendar too, of course.

"University Services" is another of the headings, and offers brief descriptions of quite a number of units and activities on campus.

There are no hyperlinks to the Web pages in which those units describe themselves in more detail, however; to find them, you'll have to skip back to the UWinfo Home Page and choose "https://uwaterloo.ca/uw_infoserv/deptpages.html " & "Departments and Groups".
