Parking rates go up

Parking rates at UW are going up next month, partly to help the university deal with a huge cut in provincial grants this year.

Effective Sept. 1, monthly rates for permit holders will be $20, up from $14, in all lots, except for Lot X ($18) on the North Campus and Lot D ($40) under Needles Hall. Parking for motorcycles will cost $25 a term.

The increases follow earlier hikes for visitor parking and coin-entry lots. The rate increases, the first since January 1993, were recommended by the Advisory Committee on Traffic and Parking, chaired by Prof. Robert Porter, Classical Studies.

At present, the rates don't cover the full costs of providing campus parking.

"Revenues generated by these parking fee increases will be used to fully fund the operation and maintenance of parking lots," said Jim Kalbfleisch, Vice-president, Academic and Provost.

"In addition, $350,000 per year is to be transferred from parking to the university operating budget to assist in coping with the loss of $19 million in operating grants from the Provincial Government."

Concert caps Mennonite music camp

The production of a mini-musical caps the 13th annual Ontario Mennonite Music Camp on through Aug. 23 at UW's Conrad Grebel College.

The 12-day music camp for students aged 12 to 15 years offers musical instruction, drama workshops and traditional camping activities, said Director Cheryl Sumsion.

Students live in residence at the church-affiliated college during the camp.

Snobelen stays on as Minister

Despite much speculation that he would be dropped, John Snobelen remains as Education Minister in the first cabinet shuffle by Ontario Premier, Mike Harris.

Harris surprised some observers with his decision on Friday to keep Snobelen, who has been under attack from the province's teachers and the university community for big funding cutbacks.

Shortly after he was appointed last year, Snobelen landed in hot water over suggestions that the Education Ministry "invent a crisis" to justify spending cuts to education.

Workshop focuses on National Parks

A UW professor is involved in the planning of a conference in Krakow, Poland on the effects of land use and development pressures on national parks and protected areas.

Gordon Nelson, Professor of Geography and Planning, and Chair of the Heritage Resources Centre, is an organizer of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop from Aug. 26 to 30.

It will look at the contribution of parks and protected areas to heritage conservation, tourism and sustainable development.

Copy Centres reduce hours

Summer hours for UW's copy centres begin today.

Betty Martin, of Graphic Services, said the reduced hours will last until Sept. 6. The summer hours are:
