Football Warriors open camp

The UW football Warriors are getting ready for the new season, with their first full practice Saturday morning at the Columbia Lake Activity Fields.

At training camp, the players are preparing to outdo last season's good record, when the Warriors finished third provincially and eighth nationally. The team is again coached by David "Tuffy" Knight, assisted by Chris Triantifilou.

UW's opening game is Saturday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. against the University of Windsor Lancers at University Stadium in Waterloo.

Celebrating 100 years

The Joseph Schneider House Museum is celebrating Victoria Park's centennial in fine style Saturday -- putting on a Waterloo County craft show.

The skills of 40 artisans will be on display at the free admission event, which begins at 10 a.m. The museum, located at 466 Queen St. S. in Kitchener, is near Victoria Park.

"This is a rare opportunity to experience at close range the precision required of such diverse artists as a glassblower, a blacksmith, a china painter and a straw weaver," said Katherine McCracken, of the museum. "In addition to demonstrating their craft, many will be offering hard-to-find reproduction items for sale."

Besides meeting the artisans, visitors can fortify themselves with fresh corn-on-the cob and juicy sausage-on-the-bun, prepared by traditional butcher Franz Kissling, of Stratford.

Buskers' carnival in full swing

The fun is unleashed today and all weekend in the eighth annual Waterloo Busker Carnival.

The jugglers, magicians, acrobats, and musicians will be entertaining the crowds until Sunday in Uptown Waterloo. The 15 street performers are staying at UW's Ron Eydt Village.

Busker performances will be held today from noon to 11 p.m., Saturday from noon to 1 a.m. and Sunday from noon to 5:30 p.m. The buskers receive money from the audience by passing around a hat after each performance.

A special children's play area, featuring a kiddie midway, face painting and free balloons as well as rides, gets under way today at King and William Streets.

For adults, the festival will hold a late-night show Saturday at 11:30 p.m. on the Parkade Pitch stage, located across from Waterloo Square.

The carnival closes on Sunday, with a family-style vaudeville show. That event also takes place on the Parkade Pitch stage, beginning at 4 p.m.
