It was 39 years ago

UW's very first classes began July 3, 1957, in a tin-roofed portable building on the campus of what was then Waterloo College -- the site of today's Wilfrid Laurier University. Dominion Day two days earlier, on July 1, is considered UW's founding day, as well as the 90th birthday of Canada and the 100th birthday of the city of Waterloo.

So . . . a committee is at work to plan celebrations for UW's 40th anniversary next year. "More than most places," says president James Downey, "we need to remind ourselves to celebrate our many accomplishments." The emphasis in marking UW's 40th ("ruby") anniversary will be on ways of celebrating that won't cost much money and won't put a strain on people who already have plenty to do.

The planning committee is chaired by chief librarian Murray Shepherd, who said he'd like to hear from anyone who might want to be part of a sub-group to work on such matters as people recognition, special events, the 40th anniversary image and logo, campus decorations, merchandising, budget and publicity. He can be reached at ext. 2281, e-mail mcshephe@library.

Walking the Web at Waterloo (7)

If you should ever want to know a little more about UW's history, you might start from the UWinfo home page by choosing the link labelled General information, and just a short way down that page you'll see a mention of UW's founding in 1957 and a link that's labelled "More about history".

Choose that link and you get to http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infoipa/history.html, a page that lists various kinds of available information -- Highlights; "Legends, Nostalgia and Trivia"; "Senior administrative officers" (nice juxtaposition there); a list of campus buildings and when they were erected; and a pointer to the UW library's archives, or more accurately to its special collections department.

If you choose that page and end up at http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/discipline/SpecColl/Special1.html, you'll see a lot of information about the rare books room in the Dana Porter Library, and -- at first -- not much that seems to be about UW's history. In part that's because not everything the library wants to put onto the Web has gotten there yet; the word "Archives", part way down the page, isn't yet a hotlink to anywhere, for example. However, if you choose "Exhibits", after the third bullet, you might get lucky. Follow the path to "Celebrating the Boar", and you'll end up at a page that tells you everything you could ever want to know about Porcellino, the boar who now lives in the arts quadrangle. Now what could be a richer fragment of UW's history than that?

The Boar page, by the way, also has a link to information about the dance collection in the rare books room, which was given to UW by the same donor who made the Boar a resident here. Among the pictures you can see there is a photo of a ballerina who, to all appearances, is balancing a bar code on her fingers.

Just a little correction

Yesterday's Bulletin, quoting material we were given, gave a pretty strange version of the career progress of Ken Lavigne, who's just been named UW's registrar. A correct (I trust) version has arrived:
Ken Lavigne currently is Associate Registrar, Admissions and Student Awards at Waterloo, a position he has held since March 1990. Prior to that he was Associate Registrar, Graduate Studies for a brief period in 1989-90, an Assistant Registrar from 1981 to 1989, and the Registrar at St. Jerome's College from 1976 to 1981.
And, as of July 1, UW's third Registrar.

Positions available this week

The human resources department will be circulating its Positions Available list to all departments, as it does every Wednesday that there isn't a Gazette. The list should also be be available on UWinfo under "Human Resources".

In this week's list:

More information: ext. 2524.

Negotiations are under way

UW officials were meeting yesterday with executives of Canadian Union of Public Employees local 793, and talks continue today. UW and CUPE 793 -- which represents some 300 staff in the plant operations and food services department -- are in negotiations for a new employment contract. The existing contract dates from July 1, 1992, and was extended by the Social Contract pay freeze through April 30, 1996.

Plays this fall and winter

The drama department has quietly announced (now there's an oxymoron for you) the list of its 1996-97 major productions. Coming to a stage near you: And that's life at Waterloo on the first day of the Dog Days (something to do with the dog-star, Sirius). Says here the city of Quebec was founded by Samuel de Champlain 388 years ago today.
