Born on the fourth of July

[US flag] Ann Landers and Dear Abby were, Rube Goldberg was, Gina Lollobrigida was, John Cherry of UW's earth sciences department was, and of course the United States was. So Fourth of July greetings today to friends south of the border who are saluting their flag and enjoying the fireworks.

And in a season for national holidays . . . if anybody on campus is planning a private or public celebration of Bastille Day next week, I'd appreciate a note, for possible mention in the Bulletin just before or after that day.

Walking the Web at Waterloo (8)

One of the links on the UWinfo home page is labelled "Information for Prospective Students" and leads to a page that just consists of links to other pages, including the graduate and undergraduate calendars and the home page of the housing and residence operation. If you choose that one, you see a page that looks rather like a Monopoly board, with little red houses representing the various kinds of accommodation available at UW. (The page also has a dramatic watermark based on the UW coat of arms.)

Choose, say, the Minota Hagey residence and you'll get to see a page that describes the residence, and shows a picture of it. Because there is no cafeteria in Minota Hagey, people wanting to live there will need to know more about where they can eat, so a link leads to the food services home page, which offers, among other things, a map with "visual access to eatery locations".

Or you can click to menus, or to information about the WatCard. "Don't wash your WatCard" is among the bits of advice offered. Interestingly, though, there doesn't seem to be any link on the food services pages to the quite separate WatCard page provided by the registrar's office. So there are limits to Web walking; you'd have to go all the way back to the UWinfo home page, then find a path to the registrar's office (via the Alphabetical list, say), in order to get there.

Religious studies office moves

As of July 1, the department of religious studies has a new chair -- Tom Yoder Neufeld, of Conrad Grebel College -- and so the department office is moving to Grebel from its previous location in St. Jerome's College.

Department secretary Luanne McGinley can be found in Grebel "residence building" room 113A, phone 885-0220 ext. 257. Neufeld is nearby in room 111, phone 885-0220 ext. 261.

And while we're talking about changes to departments: pity those people on the sixth floor of the Math and Computer building who are now under the Information Systems and Technology umbrella, but don't know quite what to call themselves. I think we'd better just devise a weird arbitrary symbol, to be pronounced "The Department Formerly Known As Data Processing and Administrative Computing".

Library books due soon

Here's an advance warning from Alex McCulloch in the user services department of the library:
Books signed out for the term from the Porter, Davis and U.M.D. libraries can now be renewed to December 11. Reminder notices will be sent out in the next two weeks to all users who have books due on August 14. Users are encouraged not to wait until August 14 to renew their books -- they might encounter long line-ups! Term loan books can be renewed at any of the three libraries, regardless of where they were signed out, but they must be brought physically into the library to be renewed. If you have any questions, please call User Services staff at ext. 5544 Porter, ext. 6913 Davis, ext. 2795 U.M.D.

About the fatal accident

A meeting of UW officials involved with housing, security, safety and other matters is scheduled for this afternoon to talk about the accidental death of Mariam Labib, not quite three years old, who was killed in a fall from the east tower of the Married Student Apartments on Saturday night.

"The main thing right now is, we want to now and what happened and where things are at," said Martin Van Nierop, UW's director of information and public affairs, as quoted in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record yesterday. He said the meeting will include discussion of whether there is a safety problem with the screens in the MSA high-rises -- where children are not usually supposed to be living.
