Visitors use the Village

Referees, underwriters, Baptists, and buskers are converging on Ron Eydt Village (that's the new name of Village II) this summer.

Well, not all at once. But those are just a few of the groups using the conference facilities this summer. Moving in yesterday, for example, were some 100 participants in a teachers' conference that will run through Friday.

Business is brisk for the conference centre, according to Dave Reynolds, its manager. "We're probably as busy or busier than last year," he said, although complete summer stats won't be tallied until this fall. Conference revenues provide funds for upgrades to the village, and help control or lower student residence fees, he said. As well, conferences make use of existing facilities that would be underutilized during the summer. Village rooms are also available on a "motel" basis for visitors passing through Waterloo.

Among the many groups on campus this summer are the Combustion Institute (Canadian Section), a 10-year reunion of mechanical engineering graduates, the Statistical Society of Canada, the London Cycling Club, the Ontario Hockey Association Referee School, the Baptist Peace Fellowship, the Life Underwriters Association of Canada, and participants in the Waterloo Busker Carnival.

Discovery visits

Speaking of combustion, the Discovery Channel came to campus Friday to do some filming in Prof. Beth Weckman's lab in mechanical engineering. Weckman is an expert on combustion and works with the local fire department to find out how structures and materials burn.

Epilepsy group seeks volunteers

A Kitchener agency committed to providing education, counselling and support to those whose lives are affected by epilepsy is seeking volunteers to serve on their Board of Directors and Committees. Volunteers would be required to attend meetings once a month. This is an opportunity, says the Volunteer Action Centre, to gain experience in management of a non-profit agency, and a chance to work with capable, caring volunteers.

Also, the Freeport Health Care Centre Volunteer Board is looking for a volunteer to assume the position of president-elect. The individual will work with the current president, be involved in strategic planning and ongoing issues, and will assume the presidency of the volunteer board after one year.

Towards the fall term

Class schedules and fee statements will be mailed this week to undergraduate students who will be on campus for the fall term. The last day to file "Intent to Graduate" forms is Friday, August 1, for students who are planning to graduate at the October convocation.

Tidbits

It looks like work is beginning on the H lot changes promised earlier this summer. Part of the parking lot was cordoned off earlier today before most staff and faculty came to work. The changes will include addition of about 70 visitor parking spots, a new entrance and information kiosk.
