Police seek dark young man

Flyers from the UW police were posted around campus yesterday with a drawing -- based on a witness's description -- of the man who is being sought in connection with four assaults on or near campus in the past few weeks.

Here's the text that goes with the picture:

Sexual assault suspect: Male; 20 years of age; slender build; straight, black, chin-length hair, parted in the centre; very dark complexion; has spots or marks on lower cheeks. Wearing dark coloured jacket and pants and was riding a dark coloured bicycle.

Occurrence: This suspect has been involved in incidents between 14 August & 30 September 1996 in and around Waterloo Park and the University of Waterloo. On 4 separate occasions a victim was walking or jogging when the above described male approached and grabbed the victim.

Any information regarding these incidents at the University of Waterloo please contact Sergeant Wayne Shortt at UW police service, ext. 6966.

The emergency number for the UW police is 888-4911 (on campus, ext. 4911).

From the police, about money

An unrelated bulletin was also issued by the UW police yesterday, passing on a warning from the Waterloo Regional Police Service:
WRPS would like to take this opportunity to warn local merchants regarding the passing of counterfeit currency. With Oktoberfest activities about to begin, merchants and cash outlets should carefully check Canadian or American notes.

Counterfeit Canadian bills of all denominations have become a major problem in our region, most recently counterfeit $10's, $20's, $50's, $100's have been passed. The $50's and $100's have the gold foil in the top left corner. This gold foil does not turn green on a counterfeit bill. The green planchetts can not be picked off a counterfeit bill and are not fluorescent under a black light. The bills lack clarity and sharp features of a genuine bill. The best detection is to closely compare the suspected note with a genuine note and look for the obvious differences.

If you receive a counterfeit note: Do not return it to the passer. Delay if possible, but do not put yourself at risk. Call police, 888-4911 or extension 4911. Note the description of passer, accomplice, and if a vehicle is seen, record the licence number.

Retirement party for three

A celebration is planned at the University Club, starting at 7:30 tonight, for three faculty members retiring from the department of Germanic and Slavic languages and literatures. Guests of honour are Manfred Kuxdorf, Hans Panthel, and Manfred Richter (though the latter is currently in Germany and will be honoured only in absentia).

Sports on the weekend

The football Warriors are off to Windsor tomorrow to face the Lancers, whose 1-and-4 record doesn't exactly qualify them as a powerhouse in the Ontario Universities Athletic Association. The Warriors are 4-1 now, and apparently on their way to a history-making season after beating the No. 1 team in the country, Western, last weekend. Western was back in town last night for an early game, and clobbered the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks 49-8.

The hockey Warriors host the Oktoberfest tournament at the Columbia Icefield and the downtown Mutual Group Arena this weekend. The first Warrior game comes tonight at 8, against York. Games continue at both locations this afternoon and evening, tomorrow at 3:00 and 6:30, and Sunday as well, with the championship game set for 3 p.m. at the Mutual Group Arena.

UW plays host to a league badminton tournament today and tomorrow, and the Trent University field hockey team visits to play the Athenas at 2 p.m. today at University Stadium on Seagram Drive.

So we come to Thanksgiving

All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin; and Monday, October 14, accordingly is the Thanksgiving Day holiday. UW offices and most services will be closed, and classes will not be held. Notes, so far as I have them, on specifics of what's in operation at Waterloo:
  • UW police: on duty 24 hours as always, 888-4911.
  • Student Life Centre: open 24 hours, turnkey desk 888-4434.
  • Library: closed Monday, usual hours Saturday and Sunday.
  • Maintenance emergencies: phone ext. 3793, 24 hours a day.
  • Computer networks: call helpdesk, 888-4839, to report major outages.
  • Information systems and technology Customer Support Centre: closed Monday, open Saturday (8:30 to 7:45) and Sunday (8:30 to 4).
  • Bookstore: open Saturday (noon to 4), closed Monday.
  • Graphics Express: closed Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
  • Food services: Brubaker's in the SLC (the one outlet that's usually open all weekend) closed Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Only the Village I servery and grill will be open Monday.
  • With the beginning of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, may we celebrate with moderation and drive with care. The weather forecast is auspicious, but let us dress warmly for the Oktoberfest parade, which starts at 9 Monday morning on King Street. And may we be, as the old grace says, truly thankful; at Waterloo we still have much to be thankful for.
