Native culture at Waterloo

Drumming, dancing, food samples and crafts are all part of a Native Awareness Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Student Life Centre today. According to Cherie Brant, president of the Native Student Association and a third year urban and regional planning student, the event will provide information about native culture on campus, particularly the "positive aspects", rather than such issues as Native land claims that make news headlines. In addition to the drumming and dancing (10 a.m. to noon), traditional food sampling (12 to 12:30 p.m.) and the craft sale (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), a series of afternoon workshops will be held: Traditional culture and spirituality, 1 to 2 p.m.; Bridging the gap between cultures, 2 to 3 p.m; Traditional medicines and healing, 3 to 4 p.m.

Accident on University Avenue

I don't have much information yet -- trying to get some from Waterloo Regional Police -- about a very ugly traffic incident on University Avenue in front of the Married Student Apartments this morning. The police did confirm that a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle and has been taken to hospital.

As Oktoberfest winds down

Onkel Hans, the mascot of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, will be paying a visit to UW today. He'll be at Brubakers, the food services outlet in the Student Life Centre, at noontime, helping to promote a beef and pork roast meal on the patio. The event not only gets into the oom-pa-pa spirit but is a fund-raiser for the campus United Way campaign.

Events over the weekend

The arts alumni group and Warrior football alumni are sponsoring a tailgate party tomorrow in Waterloo Park (the bandshell area, off Westmount Road). The event starts at 11, to precede the Waterloo-Toronto football game. Tickets are $7. Last-minute information: the alumni affairs office, 888-4973.

The Warriors and Varsity Blues kick off at 2:00 at University Stadium. Other sports on the weekend: the hockey Warriors (who were 1-and-2 in their own tournament here over Thanksgiving) head for Ryerson and Brock, the field hockey Athenas head for Guelph and Queen's, the rugby Warriors are at Western tomorrow, both soccer teams are at Brock on Saturday and Western on Sunday, the swimmers are in a tournament at Guelph, the volleyball Athenas take part in the Brock Invitational, the cross-country teams participate in the Laurier Open tomorrow, and the volleyball Warriors host the Warrior High School Classic.

The drama department's tender-and-true "Salt Water Moon" continues tonight and tomorrow night, and there are performances again next Wednesday through Saturday. Tickets: 888-4908.

The Kids' Club, sponsored by the bookstore and UW Shop, has its first event of the new season tomorrow. "We are kicking this year off," says Steve Brown at the bookstore, "with a craft day led by Judy Ann Sadler. She is the author of several successful books on crafts, the latest of which is Beading." And beading is the program for Saturday's event. It starts at 1 p.m. and is "open to anyone in the community between the ages of 7-10. Beading is really in vogue in the schoolyards these days," Brown adds, "so we expect everyone to have a lot of fun." For more information, he's at ext. 5680.

Finally -- in the Big Apple, there's a cocktail reception tonight for graduates of Canadian universities, including UW. Several hundred people are expected at the gathering, which starts at 6:00 at the Canadian Club of New York, 15 West 43 Street (just down the block from the Harvard Club).

In case you need a date

Yesterday's Gazette offered plenty of dates, and two of them were wrong.

My fault: the front page said that next week's open meeting for staff (about the proposed "framework agreement") would be held "Thursday, October 23". Of course it's Wednesday, October 23, at 7 p.m. in Math and Computer 5136B.

Not my fault: the Computer Store said in its full-page advertisement that its "Real Life Road Show" presenting Hewlett Packard products would be held "Wednesday, October 24". Again, no such day. It's Thursday, October 24.
