The day they write the ELPE

Ah, the senses are filled with orientation week! The flashing smile on a young woman waiting outside the WatCard office this morning . . . the pounding music from scratchy outdoor amplifiers . . . the greasy tang of dutchies and muffins in the Davis Centre great hall, ready for "breakfast with the dean" . . . the shrill chanting of obscenities in the arts quadrangle . . . the proud voice of David Burns, dean of engineering, telling anyone who's interested that there are 757 brand-new engineering students on the premises, just a hair over the goal of 750. . . .

All the new students are writing the English Language Proficiency Exam today: engineers at 9:30, arts students at 1:00, science students at 2:30, and students in math, ES and AHS at 4:00.

Other activities in the course of the day range from "Meet the Tool" for engineering students to a semi-formal dinner at St. Jerome's College (in, I suppose, the brand-new dining hall -- is it really ready for such an elegant event?). Mathematics has a "scunt" tonight, while engineering, AHS and accounting students will hit Federation Hall. And so on, and so on.

Some words on registration

Today's the day for undergraduates in arts (morning) and environmental studies and independent studies (afternoon) to scoot over to the Physical Activities Complex, pay their fees and "register". Students who don't make it on the assigned day -- yesterday, today or tomorrow -- can register at the PAC on Friday. After that, they'll be paying late fees, which start at $10 and go up by $3 a day.

"For your convenience," the registration newsletter says, "on-line Drop/Add Centres will be available" this week: for arts and environmental studies, on the second floor of Needles Hall; for applied health sciences, in departmental offices; for engineering, in Carl Pollock Hall 1320B; and for math and science, in Math and Computer room 5158.

"To borrow books from the library," the newsletter also notes, "you must have a WatCard. To register your WatCard, go to the circulation desk of either the Davis Centre or Dana Porter Library." And if you don't have a WatCard yet, get it in the Student Life Centre, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this week, or next week at the WatCard office.

Graduate students register too

"It's so simple with us," says Lynn Judge, director of graduate studies services. "No lineups in the PAC!" Graduate students pay their fees at the cashiers' office on the first floor of Needles Hall. As with undergrads, late fees will start next Monday for those who don't get registered by the close of business this Friday.

"If your status has changed," a leaflet says, "obtain the appropriate signatures and bring all forms to the Graduate Studies Office for adjustment before paying fees."

Judge says the printed version of the 1996-97 graduate calendar, which was a bit late, will be arriving today. Most people, however, now use the on-line version of the calendar at http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infograd/Grad_Calendar/calindex.html.

Some things on the Web

  • UW's course schedule -- Course Information Report, or CIR -- has been available through UWinfo for some time now, but the original gopher version was superseded a while ago by something more sophisticated. "The new version of the CIR was never formally announced," a memo reminds me. "For this reason, many department pages are still lining to the gopher version of the CIR." It's suggested that departments change their link and make it http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infocour/CIR/. Individual users can find the CIR through the "Courses, calendars and examinations" page on UWinfo.
  • There's a new and very extensive Web page about businesses in Waterloo, produced by something called Archeus; it can be found at http://www.golden.net/~archeus/watbus.htm.

    And these other announcements

There will be a sale of surplus UW property -- anything from obsolete computers to old furniture and unclaimed lost-and-found items -- from 11:30 to 2:00 today at central stores in East Campus Hall.

Engineering computing presents a workshop on "teaching with compressed video", today from 10:00 to noon. Last-minute information: ext. 5683.

Training for teaching assistants is continuing. In the spotlight today: a session for "teachers of German as a second language", running from 9 to 3 with an hour out for lunch. "We plan," says Linda Schmoll in the Germanic and Slavic department, "to offer a joint session with the French department in the morning and then focus specifically on teaching German with our textbook, Treffpunkt Deutsch, in the afternoon. Instructors will also become acquainted with our facilities (language lab)."

The parking office sends a reminder of its new business hours: they'll be open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.. to 4 p.m. Saturday, from now on. See this morning's Gazette for a roundup of what's new about parking, including new arrangements for the central visitor parking lots.
