We have Top Girls working on it now. Top. Girls.

The University of Waterloo's Drama Department is preparing to launch its final production of the season starting Wednesday, March 13. "Top Girls" is a contemporary play, written by Caryl Churchill that takes place during Margaret Thatcher's first term as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and tells the story of Marlene, an up and coming executive at the Top Girls Employment Agency and the difficulties she has to overcome in order to achieve career success.

Pictured above are cast members (l-r) Michelle Kestle, Sydney Spidell, Cassandra Cline, Carleigh MacDonald, Jennifer Gooderham, and Andreea Hluscu.

The poster for Top Girls, in the style of a WW2 "Rosie the Riveter" advertisement.The production "explores the political issues and moral struggles entangled in an environment where class, job and economical structures offer women fewer roads to success," writes production manager Janelle Rainville. "Assisted by a cutting-edge multimedia design by faculty member Scott Spidell, guest director Saul Garcia Lopez has created a powerful and dynamic production about women making it big."

The play runs from March 13 to March 16 at 8:00 p.m. in the Theatre of the Arts. General admission is $17, with students and seniors paying $13. More information is available online.

Stratford's MicroTile wall wins mega award

The MicroTile wall in all its glory at the Stratford Campus opening last October.The University of Waterloo Stratford Campus's MicroTiles wall, the tallest of its kind in the world, was selected as the Gold Winner in the Education and Healthcare category of the 2013 DSE Apex Awards, which honour innovation in the development and deployment of technology in the global Digital Out-Of-Home (DOOH) industry.

The wall stands three storeys tall and is located in the atrium of the Stratford Campus. It is made up of 150 MicroTiles units, stacked 5 units wide and 30 units high, or 6.5 feet by 30 feet.

Nominated by Westbury National Show Systems Ltd. and chosen by an independent panel of industry journalists, this year’s Apex Award finalists were named from a field of nearly 90 entrants, in 10 major digital signage categories. Gold, Silver and Bronze Apex Awards (in each category) were presented at an awards banquet held on the opening night of DSE 2013 on Wednesday, February 27 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

“Winning an Apex Award is a great honor for the Stratford Campus. We are extremely proud of the display wall and are thrilled that Westbury National Show Systems nominated it for this award”, says Executive Director of the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus, Ginny Dybenko. “When people enter the lobby and see the wall, it’s wonderful to see their reactions. The community is fascinated by it and the students are excited about being able to create content that they’ll be able to display on the wall. It couldn’t have happened without the collaboration teamwork from everyone involved.”

The MicroTiles wall was installed through a partnership of Westbury National Show Systems, rpVisual Solutions, Christie Digital and the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus.

The Athletics department has posted details about this weekend's Queen's Cup game between the Warriors men's hockey team and the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday morning for the game, which will take place on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Columbia Icefield.

And this past weekend's ice hockey victory is by no means the only thing being celebrated. The University of Waterloo Warriors were well represented at this weekend's 2013 Canadian University and College Squash Championships, bringing home 2 gold medals, a silver medal, and a bronze. Well played, squash team.

  • Cameron Seth earned silver in the men's open;
  • Micaala Seth won a gold medal in the women's open;
  • Gerald Gayowski won bronze in the in the Men's A; and
  • Myriam Carle earned Gold in the Women's D.

A full list of results for the Warriors squash team is posted on the Athletics site.

Here's the latest nutrition "myth vs. fact" provided by Health Services dietician Sandra Ace:

"Myth:" Coconut oil is the new miracle food.

"Fact:" Like most other “miracle foods,” this one falls short when it comes to scientific scrutiny. While numerous health benefits have been featured by the media in recent years, such as strengthening the immune system, improving thyroid function, blood sugar and cholesterol, enhancing weight loss and warding off dementia, there is currently not good enough evidence to support these claims. As a saturated fat, coconut oil does raise total cholesterol and LDL-C (or “bad” cholesterol), although to a lesser extent than butter. And while it does increase “good” cholesterol, HDL-C, unsaturated vegetable oils have the benefit of raising HLD-C and lowering LDL-C. If you like its sweet, nutty flavor, use coconut oil occasionally but stick to vegetable oils like canola, olive, peanut, soybean, safflower, sunflower or corn oil for daily use.
