Wellness Warriors get active

A trio of Waterloo students are taking part in an 8-week social media challenge with the goal of rediscovering a love for physical activity and finding new ways to be active.

The Wellness Warrior contestants—Amanda, Steven, and Vera—are being given access to Campus Recreation programming and will blog about their challenges and triumphs as they complete their journey towards an active lifestyle.

The contestants earn points for trying new things, showing school spirit, and encouraging others to join them. They are able to choose activities from campus rec offerings including Shoe Tag classes, athletics clubs, drop-in recreationintramurals, and conditioning classes. Those "Wellness Warriors" who accumulate at least 275 points in the contest will receive a $100 honorarium.

Contestants will be posting weekly updates to the Waterloo Wellness Blog, with Amanda posting on Tuesdays, Vera posting on Wednesdays, and Steven posting on Thursdays.

The contest began on September 23, so be sure to check in regularly over the course of the next few weeks for updates on their progress.

Equinox Summit closes today

This week, a multidisciplinary panel of experts on education has been working with a forum of young leaders and a group of industry and policy advisors to develop a road map for transforming education, and the initial fruits of their labour will be harvested today.

The Equinox Summit: Learning 2030 has been produced by the Waterloo Global Science Initiative, a partnership between the University of Waterloo and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

A summary document, called the Equinox Communiqué, which outlines the proposals, approaches and initiatives agreed upon by the summit's participants, will be presented to an audience of "key influencers" at the summit's closing session this afternoon.

This communiqué will lead to the Equinox Blueprint: Learning 2030, a more detailed document that will take a few months to produce. The blueprint aims to "inform, advise and inspire education influencers, government and private sector leaders globally."

The closing session of the Equinox Summit takes place at 2:00 p.m. in the Mike Lazaridis Theatre of Ideas at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, and a number of exclusive tickets are available for members of the campus community to attend. Please contact the WGSI's Ruth Namanya for ticket information.

Speaking will be Michael Brooks, John Baker, and Christine McWebb. Closing remarks will be given by Neil Turok, Feridun Hamdullahpur, John Matlock, and Julie Wright.

The Agenda with Steve Paikin will also be broadcasting today, first at 5:00 p.m. with "How Different the Classrooms of 2030?", and then at 8:00 p.m. with "Screens instead of books."

The livestream for the day's public events is below:
