Integrity campaign launches next phase

by Anaia Shaw, Office of Academic Integrity.

The University of Waterloo continues to demonstrate its commitment to integrity this Fall with the launch of phase two of the work. study. play. with integrity campaign.

Phase one of the work. study. play. with integrity campaign, launched in 2011, focused on how students incorporate honesty, trust, fairness, responsibility, and respect into all aspects of their university life – academics, residence, athletics, and co-operative education. Phase two highlights those same values in faculty and staff to emphasize that all members of the university community are dedicated to integrity at Waterloo.

The Office of Academic Integrity (OAI), in consultation with Creative Services, has produced five videos and posters starring President Feridun Hamdullahpur, Pearl Sullivan, Dean of Engineering, Bob Copeland, Director of Athletics and Recreational Services, and two student Dons. All posters and videos are available on the OAI’s website, and can also be seen on poster boards and digital displays across campus.

To maximize the exposure and success of this campaign, the OAI has recruited Student Ambassadors to hold in-person promotional sessions. These Student Ambassadors are graduate and senior undergraduate students who have the passion and skills to engage fellow students on the subject of academic integrity. (Student Ambassadors Nishil Mohammed, Baoling Chen, Zheng Shao, Sonja Chen, Babina Kharel, Ahmed Abdel Aziz and Renishaki Kamalanathan are pictured above with President Feridun Hamdullahpur.)

The OAI invites anyone who has a question about academic integrity or wants to learn more about the work. study. play. with integrity campaign to stop by an in-person session. There will be giveaways, quizzes with prizes, and more – you may even meet one of the campaign stars! You can also keep up-to-date on sessions and campaign-related activities through Waterloo’s Facebook and Twitter feeds. Promote the campaign through your own channels using #integritymatters to spread the message even further!

In addition to the work. study. play. with integrity campaign, the OAI has two new exciting initiatives to share with the university community!

For staff, a new “Integrity Matters” workshop, co-developed by Organizational & Human Development and the OAI, uses the five values of integrity to facilitate discussion and self-exploration. Participants have the opportunity to articulate their personal values, develop skills to promote integrity in the workplace, and reflect on how integrity manifests itself in all aspects of their lives.

And for students, weekly office hours are now available for them to ask questions and learn about resources that will help them succeed at Waterloo:

  • Mondays, 11:30-1:00 in TC 1109
  • Tuesdays, 11:30-1:00 in V1 Campus Resources in Rez (room 191 by the cafeteria)
  • Thursdays, 10:00-11:30 in V1 Campus Resources in Rez

As always, the Office of Academic Integrity encourages you to visit its website for more information, stop by its promotional events, and send any questions or suggestions to academic.integrity@uwaterloo.ca. Integrity works at Waterloo!

Reunion is for everyone who has personal connection with Waterloo. So join us and learn about all the great things alumni are doing, and tell them about the great things you’ve been up to as part of the university  or an alumnus yourself.

Bring your kids and show them your beloved campus, join the Fun Run, or check out one of the college cultural festivals. Put on your waterloo pride and cheer on the Warriors as they take on the Guelph Gryphons.  September 28 boasts many great events that will give you the opportunity to experience the excitement the alumni bring.

Get your shirts for Mental Health Wellness Day

by the Mental Health Wellness Day committee.

Volunteers show off the mental health wellness day t-shirts.We are one month away from Mental Health Wellness Day, on Thursday, October 24. This important campus-wide initiative is recognizable by the sea of bright orange t-shirts with ‘1 in 5 – Ask Me’ written on the back. Since 1 in 5 Canadians will be affected by mental illness in their lifetime, we encourage all faculty, staff and student leaders to wear their orange t-shirts on October 24 to show uWaterloo students that mental health issues are important to talk about, uWaterloo is a caring community, and we have the resources to help.

Departments received an email from Mark Beadle, the Director of Campus Wellness last week about t-shirt ordering. We urge all faculty and staff to wear their t-shirts from last year, however if you have lost yours or never had one, the administrative lead in your area will contact you about t-shirt orders, which are due Friday, September 27.

More details about Mental Health Wellness Day will be posted in October.
