Next week, a grand opening for Health Services

The expanded Health Services building will be celebrated on Thursday, September 18 with a grand opening event.

Features of the new building including 20 examination rooms, 2 physician collaboration stations, a 3,400 square foot mental health wing with 9 counselling offices and two psychometric testing rooms, and a green roof. Work continues on a new family health clinic that will feature 7 examination rooms and 3 dedicated infant care rooms.

The original Health Services building facade. The original 10,250 gross square feet Health Services building opened in 1968 as a doctor's clinic and small hospital to serve a student population of 9,000. The building now serves a population of more than 34,000, and though the building was renovated after its construction, its original footprint was no longer adequate for the University's needs.

The proposal for a $10-a-term student fee to help fund the construction of the Health Services building expansion was brought to undergraduate students in November 2009 in a referendum, which passed by a vote of 2,567 to 1,641. Graduate students also voted in favour of the fee. With this $7.75M commitment from the students in place, a campaign was launched to secure an additional $2.25M from alumni, parents, friends, and employees through the Keystone Campaign.

The original Health Services building was designed by renowned architect Raymond Moriyama in 1967. The architects for the addition were Kearns and Mancini Architects Inc. in association with John MacDonald Architect inc.

The addition's design is respectful of the original building in its extensive use of glass, which creates a backdrop and reflects the surrounding landscape.

The grand opening event is open to the public, but registration is recommended. Remarks begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by guided tours of the new facility.

Please note that the Health Services Clinic will be closed for the morning of September 18 during the grand opening and will re-open at 1:00 p.m.

A Take Back the Night march.
Join Waterloo to Take Back the Night

This is the latest in a series of #UWCommunity weekly features that highlight Waterloo in the community.

All students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to join the University of Waterloo and participate in Waterloo Region's 31st annual Take Back the Night rally and march. Take Back the Night addresses the rights of women, children, and trans*people to be safe, without violence, regardless of age, creed, location, numbers, or attire.

Diana Parry, Special Advisor to the President on Women's and Gender Issues, acknowledges that although it is 2014, gendered violence remains a serious issue that needs to be addressed.

"This is a great opportunity for members of the University community to come together and show our support for an end to violence against women and trans*people. By participating in Take Back the Night the University of Waterloo is standing with our community to say everyone deserves the right to be safe — all day and all night."

The University of Waterloo contingent will meet at 5:30 p.m. in front of William's by Kitchener City Hall where participants will be provided with a T-shirt to wear during the rally and march. The rally will get underway at 6:00 p.m. followed by the march.

As a symbolic gesture to say that women should not have to be escorted by men in order to exercise their mobility rights without fearing violence, the march is for women, trans*people, and children. Men are encouraged to attend the opening rally, line the marching route, and join the marchers afterwards for refreshments. Events such as Take Back the Night provide an important opportunity for members of UWaterloo to increase awareness about and call for an end to violence against women, children, and trans*people.

Renison installs principal Saturday

The installation of The Rev. Wendy Fletcher as principal and vice-chancellor of Renison University College will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 13 at Waterloo's Church of the Holy Saviour.

In addition to the role of principal, Professor Fletcher will also be taking on the position of director of international and inter-cultural development. The purpose of this new position is to promote strategic directions that will develop the capacity of Renison's programs to meet the needs of language and cultural studies of both the College's and the University's growing numbers of students either from abroad or intending to work or study abroad.

As an experienced administrator, Professor Fletcher joined Renison in August with a strong reputation for managing in a style that is characterized by open communication, collaborative relationships, and an emphasis on team building.
