Twitter founder to speak on campus

a news release from the media relations team.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.Jack Dorsey (right), the co-founder of Twitter and one of the youngest tech executives in Silicon Valley, will address students and local entrepreneurs at the University of Waterloo this fall.

Dorsey, who launched his second successful startup, Square, in Canada last year will tell a 675-strong audience about entrepreneurship and how Square created a culture that inspires anyone to be an entrepreneur and leader.

The 36-year old will also meet some students and entrepreneurs at a private lunch to discuss entrepreneurship and see firsthand the quality of Waterloo students.

“Jack Dorsey started a new communications movement when he launched Twitter and changed the world for millions of people. He’s continued to blaze the technology trail with Square, which is starting to transform how we make payments. ” said Pearl Sullivan, dean of engineering at Waterloo. “Waterloo is recognized as a leader in technology and innovation. We are very honoured that Jack Dorsey is making our University the first stop on his Canadian visit. We live and breathe entrepreneurialism here at Waterloo, so Jack will feel right at home on our campus.”

The talk, hosted by the C100 organization of Canadian entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley in partnership with Waterloo and Communitech, will take place on September 19, 2013.

Students and entrepreneurs can register for the event on the C100 website. A live stream will be available.

Library service interrupted as software updated

A Tri-University Group of Libraries (TUG) upgrade to Library software is currently underway that is impacting some services offered by the university's libraries.

Books and course reserves will continue to be signed out during the upgrade, however, holds, recalls and book renewals will not be available.

Library card registration and TUGdoc requests will also be unavailable.

Primo, the library's search tool that replaced the venerable TRELLIS back in 2009, will remain available throughout the upgrade.

The updated is expected to be complete on Wednesday, August 21.

For more information, please contact Jamie Reilly, Manager, Circulation Services: Lending.

In other library news:

Various renovations continue apace, with updates available online.

The Course Reserves system will be upgraded from August 19 to August 30. During the upgrade, the Course Reserves website will be unavailable. Anyone with questions can email the Course Reserves Team or call them at 519-888-4567 ext. 33648.

The Tri-University Group of Libraries will be transitioning the TUGdoc service over to the existing RACER service on Thursday, August 29. This change will help to streamline requests. To request a journal article not available at the Library, place a request via RACER, regardless of whether or not it is available in another TUG Library. There are no other changes to the TUG Hold and Recall service.

Hockey Warriors trade sticks for clubs

You don't usually hear hockey players yell "fore" after they shoot, but that may happen on September 28th as the University of Waterloo Women's Hockey team organizes their first annual golf tournament fundraiser. Pictured above is Kaitlyn “Donnie” McDonnell demonstrating a novel ice chipping technique.

The tournament is being held at the Doon Valley Golf and Country Club in Kitchener, and will take place on Saturday, September 28. All proceeds will be used for improving the overall experience of being a student-athlete, and includes financing academic scholarships for players, providing top-of-the-line equipment, and team building activities.

Money raised will also be used to sponsor recruiting events that inform high school students about playing hockey while attending university, and to promote the University of Waterloo.

The Women's hockey team has been competing in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) since 2002. Last season the Warriors made their first playoff appearance since 2007. Now entering their 12th season, the team hopes to build on their success and move up the standings. The 2012-2013 team had 14 new recruits in the lineup, and this year the team has three new recruits.

The golf tournament is 18 holes, best ball shot-gun format. The cost is $150 per player, or $560 for a foursome. This includes full course dinner.

If you have any questions, please contact Shaun Reagan, the head coach of the team. Registration details are available online.
